And up the river we will row, row, row, right up the river; well, not really. It's up and down the Mississippi on a classic paddlewheeler, as a group of 53s and their families and friends cruise up river and back to New Orleans from November 8 through November 12. A special treat will be the appearance of professor Donald Pease on board, sharing his expertise of Mark Twain and the river with our group. In addition, Dave Florence, a denizen of New Orleans, will host a fabulous cocktail party. The fortunate sailors are: Phil Beekman and Carol Sue Emmons, Marilyn Paganucci, Mitzi and Fred Carleton, Martin DeGennaro, Richard Lesneski, Jane and John Springer, Elsa Luker, Howard Geer, Judy and Sherman Horton, Shelagh Saxon, Elizabeth and Burt Dorseft, Ellen and Fran Lesperance and their granddaughter, Dave Halloran, Cathy and Bob Callendar, Dona and Elton Clark, Nancy and Bill Johnson, Ann and Ralph Heins, Harriet Warm and Dick Blum, Adair and Bill Beutel and Ann and Harlan Fair.

Ron Scheman concluded his tenure as director general of the Inter-American Agency for Cooperation and Development. Thanking the members of the Permanent Council of the OAS, Ron reiterated: "Our task has always been to search, to probe, to challenge, to try to make connections, all for our American family, our American community." He challenged the council to tackle challenges in social development, education and "this huge burden of poverty," warning that "democracy will not thrive without development." Effusive thanks and praise were offered to Ron by ambassadors from Mexico, Guatemala, Grenada, Panama, Canada and the United States. Congratulations, Ron, on a lifetime of dedication to the people of our hemisphere!

After a tough but unsuccessful run for the presidency of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Chuck Noll, its former secretary, has assumed the position of chairman of the student job fair committee with the expectation of setting up five new permanent interview locations around the country. Chucks professional resume featuring the multiple appearances of the words "president" and "chairman" attest to his distinguished career in the petroleum industry.

Joanie and Bernie Sudikoff's grandson, Daniel Weisman, will be entering Dartmouth as a member of the class of 2008. He continues a long tradition in both Bernie's and Joanies families. Their three children are Dartmouth alums, as are many other family members. Peggy and Andy Siglers granddaughter, Elizabeth Sigler, will be carrying on a family tradition when she matriculates in September with her grandfather and two aunts as alums. Mary Anne and Bob Lambert are the proud grandparents of Rachel Lambert '08, daughter of Lance Lambert, and Ada Lambert '08, daughter of Robin Lambert Graham '76 and John Graham '75, making the fourth generation of Dartmouth Lamberts. Elizabeth and Ray Lawrence are thrilled that their grandson, Daniel Lawrence Dittrick, will be a member of the class of 2008.

Sadly, I must write of the death of Fred Hitt, a giant of a man, a wonderful friend and classmate and a loyal alumnus. Our sincere condolences are offered to his wife, Elaine, and his children, Mary, Toby and Carolyn.
