It seems like yesterday we '63s were romping on the Green with brainy outlook and athletic energy. But 40-plus years have passed, and though youthful thoughts linger, we must face life's realities. Recognizing this, our class has launched an ambitious program to reach out and offer help and solace to those of us who may be enduring illness, job loss, family problems and other hardships. The program is unusual in scope. Designed by a committee of four, The Class of 1963 Family Network is intended to involve all of us as both "caregivers" and "care recipients." Any of us could be in either position at one time or another. The plan is to ere- ate a Concerned Classmates Committee, which will in turn appoint and manage up to 80 care- givers. The job of the caregivers will be to reach out to a number of classmates three or four times ayear, determine if they are "in crisis," offer com- fort and advice and encourage others to reach out to the classmate. Ideally, we will all be looking in on each other. "Some classmates may not want anyone calling them, which we will honor," said Bill Wellstead, who chaired the committee of Bruce Baggaley, Jim Clouser and Mike Emerson. Others may be wary, Bill says, because they've been "called before only for financial contribu- tions. We hope the first call or two by a caregiver should alleviate their concerns." So how do we all get involved? First, we have to update our e-mail addresses and phone numbers, says Bill. We do this by logging on to www.dartmouth.edu, clicking on "Alumni and Friends," then "Vox Alumni Network" and finally "Online Services Directory," where you can update your information. You can also fill out and return the Dartmouth College alumni questionnaire periodically sent to you or call Alumni Affairs at (603) 646-3116. "Secondly, we need caregivers," says Bill, "and thirdly, we want classmates to let us know when they hear of other classmates with a major problem." So caregivers and others get going. And it seems like yesterday I was in Caen, France, with Rich Danziger in the first Dartmouth contingent open to non-French majors. Rich earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry at the Universi- ty of Alberta and a medical degree at George Washington. He headed allergy/immunology at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in San Diego until retirement from the Navy. So, with a new job as allergy chief at Sharp Rees-Stealy Medical Group, a new grandson born to daughter Kathryn and a new daughter-in-law wed to son Derek, Rich and Berna decided it was time to buy a new house and they did.
Another M.D. with a penchant for foreign study Richard Edelson (Poland, summer, 1960) is recovering from a serious bicycle accident, according to Dartmouth Med alumni newsletter. Richard is back at work and can be reached at rne@neurologycenter.com,home address 7426 Hampden Lane, Bethesda, MD 20814.
