As gorgeous autumn encircles Hanover, local coffee talk naturally concerns the Dartmouth football season. Old-timers know only too well that the way to hex any team is premature boasting, especially in the Ivies where anything can, and frequently does, happen. Dartmouth, nevertheless, does, hope for success in 1993, her 112th intercollegiate football season.
Dartmouth's cherished football tradition continues with vigor and prestige. As of this writing the Big Green has played 950 games, won 584, lost 321, tied 45. We lead in victories over Brown, Columbia, Cornell, and Princeton. After 60 games we are tied with Pennsylvania 29-29-2, and defeated by Yale 42-28-6, and by Harvard 50-41-5.
Since Ivy League formation in 1956, Dartmouth has won the conference title 16 times, eight alone and eight shared.
Our 1993 team is led by captain Jay Fiedler '94, age 21, a six-foot three-inch, 220-pound quarterback from Oceanside, N.Y. An engineering major with a 3.15 grade point average, he led the nation last year in forward passing—273 attempts, 175 completions for 2,748 yards, including 25 touch downs. He was unanimously elected by league coaches to the All-Ivy first team, and he was designated All-Ivy Academic and New England Player of the Year.
Of course, offense wins games, but defense wins championships. From last year's championship squad, 15 of the top 22 defenders return.
So, will Dartmouth top the Ivies for the fourth consecutive year? Anything can happen, but don't bet dinner money on it unless you really prefer self-service.
