The College has a skating team without hockey sticks. While none of us were looking, figure skating became a collegiate team sport. Found this out from Gordie Plummer, because his granddaughter, Katie Collins '06, is a member of the team. And Dartmouth wrapped up a good season, came in first at the national competition in Amherst last March.
Summer heat getting you? Think about winter sports.
Last winter Ric Bradley, longtime skiing enthusiast and Colorado professor, joined those of us who have reluctantly hung up our skis. Hey, guys, we're now in our 80s! Reminds us of a beautiful day almost 10 years ago, when Bill McElnea, Eric Barradale, Fritz Hier, Jack Snobble and several more '44s and wives were lunching at a midway restaurant on Snowmass. Bill introduced us to a nice little old lady. It was her first day skiing in five years. She'd broken a hip at 80! Later Bill pointed out her husband, also on skis, whispering that he was 90!
Dick Ranger and Carol skied with Barbara and Bill at Snowmass last January, and Bill said, "It just doesn't get any better than this." Agreeing with that sentiment, Dick and Carol went back to Aspen in February with California friends. But, Carol says, "We're slowing down a bit." Hardly sounds that way.
We salute Al Winkler and John Haffenreffer, who left us in March, and bid them a sad farewell.
Stay well! Stay active (maybe not skiing)!
