Class president Bob Kirk has resigned, he has informed the executive committee. Bob was a strong leader and we will miss his humorous take on almost everything. Executive vice president Dick Burns replaces Bob as president. Dick and Shirley live in Nashua, New Hampshire.
An encouraging report from our fundraiser deluxe, Warren Kreter, who reports that the class' contribution to the 2005 College Fund was "very successful" with a total of more than $130,000 raised, compared to our goal of $115,000. This estimate was made during the summer, before the final tallies were completed.
"Charles Weinberg '42, Th'43: Sixty-Plus Years of Friendship." That was the headline this past summer on a story in Buzz Flood, the on-line Dartmouth newsletter run by students. The article goes on to tell the story of Charles, Jim Skinner, Jim O'Mara and Don Amy and how they were called up for Navy service together from Tuck School in the winter of 1943. They spent 90 days on the USSPrairie State, a decommissioned battleship used for training, were then commissioned ensigns in the Civil Engineering Corps of the Navy. From there they were sent to Camp Peary in Virginia for further training before being reassigned to various parts of the world. The article quotes Charles: "We all made it back in one piece, and we're still going strong." After the war they all became successful in the building business, the story says. What bond holds this 60-plus friendship together? "We had a common education, common interests and are just good friends," says Charles. "We like to get together and talk about the good old days."
Joe Nason writes and sends a clip from TheBoston Globe that tells the story of a golf outing held to remember Paul McLaughlin, son of our own late Ed McLaughlin. Paul, you may recall, was an assistant attorney general who was murdered by a gang member back in 1995.
Received a short note from George Rushton in Tulsa, Oklahoma, asking for the address of Ralph Twining, also of Tulsa, but George gave no information about his doings.
