Hearye! Hearye! June and reunion is coming fast. After the first mailing, there are 150 pleasant yes's, 32 hopeful maybe's, 43 disappointing no's, and many unheard from. Perhaps a few are unreachable whether in the upper Amazon, the Congo or highest Tibet, but most of you are within a short distance of the U.S.P.O. The next mailing in January will include the class book, superbly edited by Jim Perkins and Joe Mathewson, and a second appeal for participation, It is being sent, unlike the Alumni Magazine, to all living matriculants and widows with known addresses. Be it known that John Demas has been organizing a pre-reunion get-together of Theta Delts that at this date numbers 16-plus.
Homecoming weekend presented the 50th reunion class with a breakfast give and take with President Wright, the lead in the parade to Dartmouth Hall and a post-game reception at Jere Daniell's home attended by several Harvard 'sss. This was in addition to the usual breakfast meeting attended by 29 classmates, members of our executive council and William Rollins from California. The dinner Saturday evening honored three classmates for their contributions to society, Dartmouth and the class. Chairman Jack Cogswell roasted and toasted John Callahan, our new Alumni Council representative, Brooks Parker and yours truly. Dick Batchelder attended the evening festivities. He was a recent inductee into the St. Johns Prep Athletic Hall of Fame. It probably wasn't his golf game.
Other '55s receiving accolades include Lew Wolfson, professor of communications at American University who was elected an honorary member in the Alpha Chapter of New Hampshire and will be inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in June. Dartmouth (1787) is the fourth oldest chapter following, in order, the College of William & Mary (1776), Yale (1780) and Harvard (1781). Jere Daniell received the Fac- ulty Award for Service to Alumni Continuing Education at Dartmouth at the Alumni Council dinner December 2. He leads a group to Paris for a short week studying our Founding Fathers this coming spring—join him.
As most of us are aware, Dartmouth has launched a campaign for the Dartmouth Ex- perience, which is seeking $1.3 billion over the next five years. It is interesting that our institution stands 16th in endowment dollars per student. A recent unsettling issue has been the flap caused by the director of admissions'letter to the president of Swarthmore that football players generally deflate the scholastic standards. This, despite their better graduation percentage than the general student population at Dartmouth. The firing of the coach only made it a more incendiary situation.
Woody Goss informed me that Jim Nelsen and Gordie Russell served on the committee that selected Bob Blackman as coach. We need you, guys!
It has just come to my attention that Mark Leipman died on December 31, 2003, after along illness. Ralph Sautter received another nice note with his annual dues from Ryutaro Shindo: "From a far country I heartily wish the 50th reunion in Hanover will be most successful."
