Joe Kabat enjoyed some good Dartmouth interviewing experiences recently. He was the lone person representing Dartmouth amongst 120 other colleges at private and public high schools. With green blazer and College literature he showed photos of the freshmen he took at the College Grant in September. They attracted much interest. He then hosted two earlydecision candidates at his home. He also enjoyed notifying a young athletic woman that she was admitted. Joe says athletics are very important to today's candidates and some look at our college as "geographically isolated."
Dick Fries' daughter, Jennifer Bolger, wrote to us to extol the virtues of dad's Bellwether Dry Goods business, which has been receiving a lot of good press this year from local and national magazines and newspapers. Richard and wife Georgina live and work in Lothian, Maryland. Their Web site is a nice one: www. bellwetherdrygoods.com.
John Ryan visited me in Pinehurst recently as his law firm was working and playing golf at our local resort. He is a partner with the firm Vandeventer Black in Norfolk, Virginia, and his achievements are numerous and noteworthy. He serves as general counsel to Virginia International Terminals and served as the president of the Virginia Bar Association from 1988-1989, just to name a few. He also serves on the board of Children's Hospital, is a director of the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, is a commissioner of the Arts and Humanities Commission of Virginia Beach and is a former director of the Virginia Symphony.

Admissions chief Karl Furstenberg's negative letter about Dartmouth football has caused quite a stir, as well it should. But I have a recent personal experience with Dartmouth athletics of a much lighter nature. I played golf with Bill Johnson, the Dartmouth golf coach for 35 years, who now lives in Southern Pines, next door. I noticed his license had "PGALFF," and asked him what the LFF stood for. He said that in all of his years coaching the Dartmouth lads he had one guiding principle, "Let the F@#&er Fly!"
