As I walk back from Alumni Gym to the Hanover Inn, I'm reminded of winters long past, as the cold crisp air outside New Hamp and Heorot instantly freezes any part of my body that isn't covered. Of course it doesn't help that I'm wearing shorts under the mistaken impression that, though I am 50, my body can handle the same abuse as these 19- and 20-year-olds I see all around me. They move effortlessly as they walk across the snow-filled Green in flip flops and T-shirts. It's just another reminder for us all that time moves on.
As most of you may know, the talk of the College these days is all about athletics and admissions and the implicit tension between the two. There's lots of merit on all sides of this issue and I've read plenty of passionate e-mails during the past month or so advocating one side or another—so I won't weigh in on it. As one of the few diehards who went to most of the home games this year, I can, however, state with certainty that better seasons must be ahead.
Now on to the mailbag.
Douglas Fenn Wilson sent me a letter with a few catalogs of his recent work. For those of you who don't know, Doug has spent 30 years as a full-time painter, sculptor and writer and his collection of work is truly remarkable. To see some of it first-hand, Doug invites all of us to go to his Web site, douglassfennwilson.com, and to order by mail; Doug can be reached at P.O. Box 848, Glen Ellen, CA95442. Well done, Doug!
And not to be outdone, one of my favorite politicians Kel Seliger made it four in a row on No- vember 4, winning re-election to Texas Senate District 31. The win seta Texas record, following wins by Kel in a special election in January, a spe- cial election runoff in February and the Repub- lican primary in March. As Kel said recently, "The secretary of state told me he thought three elec- tions in 48 days was a state record for Texas, but I would be surprised if someone had ever run four races in a year." With four full years in front of him, Kel intends to focus on three key items: lowering taxes, economic development and free BBQ for any classmate within 20 miles. Those of us who have run campaigns before can only imagine what it's like to run four of them in 12 months. Congratulations, Kel.
Remember, reunion is only a few months away. June is right around the corner. And I invite all classmates to visit the class of 1975 reunion Web site, www.dartmouth.org/classes/75/.
Nancy and I send our best for a healthy and happy New Year.
