Dr. Frank West, who writes alumni news for his DMS class, turns out to be a useful informant on the doings of our '43 classmates who attended Dartmouth Medical School. His column for the fall issue of DMS carried remarks of Bud Clarke, who still toots a horn, sax and clarinet, as he has for some 70 years in various jazz groups but most recently, because the hours are better, with a local concert band. The same Bud Clarke wrote in another recent issue of DMS of his experiences as a Dartmouth Med student, which Howie Leavitt may expand on in his newsletter. Howie Thomas recently wrote from his winter digs in Tucson to report on the death of Bob Kerwin. They were good friends, both serving in the foreign service after attending the School of Advanced International Studies of John Hopkins together. In a recent conversation with Bob Barnum I learned that he and Joan have become involved with the prison visitation program at Connecticut's Women's Danbury Facility. This, in addition to a twice a week visit to his law office, keeps him busy. They are a bit iffy about a planned trip to the Galapagos Islands and Peru in March. Bob reports he occasionally runs into Bud Hall and a former medical partner of Coo Delany. In a brief conversation with Mary Jenkins she reported that John was a good neighbor, driving Barbara and Bob Liming to, I suppose, a dentist or doctor. She was curious about Cape Cod weather, as Hanover was almost snowless (in February) while the Cape was under some 40 inches! I had to tell her I was calling from Cincinnati, where three inches is a crisis! Mort Pechter sent me a photo of Alese and himself receiving the NOGI award (akin to the Oscars) for their achievements in diving and underwater photography. They are a handsome and healthy looking couple and they join a prestigious group of underwater pioneers— Cousteau, Ballard, etc. Herb "Hex" Harrigan noted on his holiday card that Louise and I are the "zoomingest" travelers (whatever that means) but suggests we stay away from Afghanistan and Iraq. Deaths to report: William Wilson and the aforementioned Bob Kerwin. Our condolences to the families. Reminder dates! Cape mini, June 9; fall mini, September 30 to October 2. Stay well!
