Stet Whitcher's attendance at the Alumni College this summer marked his 39th year of participation. That is where Carol and I first met Stet. We were impressed by his charm and learned to admire his dedication to the class of '40

Searching for a role for the '40 notes for the Alumni Magazine, I find the space constraints and long lead times rather limiting. Ike Weed covers class news admirably in the '40 Drum so I would like to collect little vignettes of the type submitted by Karl Bruch in the last two issues. It would be appropriate to have such items submitted by wives and widows as well as classmates. Please send me your stories to keep the ball rolling.

During junior year it was necessary to bolster my grades, since a 40-hour workweek had taken its toll academically. In organic chemistry lab I made a special effort in setting up my equipment for a demonstration. Dr. Eldon Bennett Hartshorn inspected my work and said, "Well, your work merits a C." Crestfallen, I asked why it rated so low. He replied, "When you came into the lab was that soiled beaker and stirring rod on the bench? Neatness and cleanliness are important to the final mark." He had made an important point. I have since become something of a "neatnik." Dr. Hartshorn gets all the credit!

In April and May we bid sad farewells to Jonathan E. Ingersoll April 20, W. Frederick Bachelder May 9 and Donald B. Cobb May 29.
