It isn't only the football team that's expecting to improve over last year: Hopes are high from the Connecticut River to Hanover Country Club and on all the playing fields in between. For the men's soccer team there's pressure to retain the Ivy League title won last fall. Club teams may not be listed below but Dartmouth rugby players are looking for a fail season worthy of their new Corey Ford clubhouse.

TEAM OVERALL (IVY) FALL 2004 RECORD 2005 SCOUTING REPORT FOOTBALL 1-9 (1-6) The big news is that coach Buddy Teevens '79 returns to the helm of his alma mater, determined to lead the team to its 18th Ivy title. Dartmouth's 17 previous championships are the most by any school in the conference. Rooters are remembering the glory days of Lambert Trophies in 1965 and 1970. WOMEN'S SOCCER 7-6-4 (2-3-2) Looking to improve on last year's 5th-place finish in the league, new hire Angie Hind is psyched: "With the hard work and commitment that has been evident since I took over as head coach I feel so positive not only about this year but shaping a very strong future here." MEN'S SOCCER 7-3-7 (5-0-2) Defending Ivy League champs want to make it two in a row and advance deep into the NCAA tournament, where they lost last year to Boston University in the first round. All but one of last year's starters are back. After two home scrimmages and a trip to California, the team hosts Fairfield September 10. First Ivy match-up will be at home vs. Princeton, 2:30 p.m. October 2. FIELD HOCKEY 8-9 (4-3) Team is led by co-captains Nina Fulmer '06 and Laura Kistler '06. Assistant coach Andy Smith has received local publicity for his new stick design that is being marketed by Brine after the phenomenal performance of Smith's prototype in the hands of corner specialist Rebekkah Stucker '05 last year. MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY 2nd in Heptagonals Runners finished 2nd in the Ivies last year and look to contend for league title. Ben True '08, also a cross-country ski racer, is team's best. WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY 4th in Heptagonals Women harriers pounded the trails in July and August to prepare for their season under coach Maribel Sanchez Souther '96. Nine freshmen join squad led by Megan Olds '06, Melanie Schorr '06, Hilary Dionne '07 and Susan Dunklee '08. EQUESTRIAN 1st at 3 of 6 shows Fall is warm-up to spring season, when Dartmouth competes in regional, Ivy, New England, Zone and National championships. WOMEN'S GOLF ... Team looks to improve on its 4th-place finish in the Fall 2004 Dartmouth Invitational. MEN'S GOLF ... Chaki Kobayashi '06 and Kenan Yount '06, who finished 7th and T-20 in last spring's New England Championship, will be closing out their Dartmouth golf careers this season. The team finished 6th with a 620 score in the event. WOMEN'S TENNIS ... Team will have to cope with graduation of All-Ivy Jayme Ahmed '05—but newcomers include Top-20 Canadians Danielle and Jennifer Murray '09 from British Columbia—identical twins who are also national jump rope champs—and 2004 Virginia state high school champ Jamie Caplan '09. MEN'S TENNIS ... After disappointing (i.e., winless) showing in Ivy matches last spring, team looks to use fall as launch pad for improvement come spring 2006. WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL 6-18 (3-11) Outside hitter Sarah Nadler '06, a two-time honorable mention All-Ivy, captains team that hosts Dartmouth Invitational September 23-24 before traveling to Harvard for first league game September 30. MEN'S & WOMEN'S CREW Heavywt: 4-3 (0-2) Lightwt: 5-3 (1-3) Women: 2-10 (0-5) The Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston on October 22-23 will highlight the fall season; women's varsity eight will have five new faces. SAILING —-- Two of last year's five Ail-American sailors return for 2005-2006: Erin Storck '07, a member of the coed team, and Emily East '06, who was voted women's team honorable mention. Having finished second in the Fowle Trophy standings last spring, the team hosts the Captain Hurst Bowl September 10-11.
