Gary Gilson reports a visit to Denver, Colorado, and a good talk with Harry Tuft. Harry has always loved music. In 1962 he opened the Denver Folklore Center, where you could play or listen to folk music. Harry said, "Many people going to California from the East and from Chicago stopped in and played for us"—Otis Taylor, Joan Baez Judy Collins, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie. The Denver Folklore Center served es- tablished musicians, but has always been a place for budding musicians to learn. In 1972 Gary formed a band that is still performing under the name Grubstake. Harry and others started the nonprofit Swallow Hill Music Association, turning over his concert hall and school of music to this group. Five years ago he revitalized hootenannies in Denver. Harry leads the sing-along. Next time you are in Denver, stop by the Denver Folklore Center and say hello to Harry. You might even want to join one of his hoots ( www.blackroseacoustic.org ) .
