I would like to remind MALS alumni of the upcoming annual luncheon and open meeting of the MALS Alumni Council, the governing body of the MALS Alumni Association. All MALS alumni, students and faculty are invited, but it is necessary to reserve your place. Please contact the MALS office at mals.program @dartmouth.edu. The lunch will take place on Wednesday, July 12, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Hayward Lounge of the Hanover Inn. Our fea- tured speakers this year are MALS professors Myrna and Harvey Frommer. They will discuss the ways they use oral history in their books, articles and presentations, demonstrating its appliscability not only to historical accounts but also to sports journalism, travel writing, biography/memoir and performance art. The Alumni Council meeting will begin at 2 p.m. Anyone who has suggestions on how the alumni association can better serve its members and work to raise the profile of the MALS program is encouraged to stay for the meeting.
A recent activity of the MALS Alumni Association was the sponsorship of the April 7 spring social to bring MALS alumni together with MALS students and faculty. In spite of the dismal spring weather, the DOC house was filled with spring flowers, balloons, cheerful company and good food and drink. Judy Chypre (MALS'99) coordinated the event. Among the MALS alumni attending were Mike Beahan (MALS'97), Phyllis Nemhauser (MALS'03), Nancy Silliman '95 (MALS'96) and Nermina Zildzo (MALS'05).
Pavel Bogdan (MALS'05) and Melinda Evans (MALS'02) were recently featured in a dance concert given by the Dartmouth Dance Ensemble (DDE). Melinda, who has danced on tour both nationally and internationally, has been a member of the MALS Alumni Council since she received her MALS degree. Through a twist of fate, Pavel joined the DDE two years ago. Three years ago he entered the MALS program with a degree in management, a strong interest in business and the intention of returning to Moscow to join his fathers construction business. However, he had worked in student stage productions while a student in Moscow and became involved in theater during his first year at Dartmouth. He also pursued his interest in business through taking courses, and even his independent study, at Tuck. Then he went to work on the musical The AppleTree. Ford Evans, director of Hopkins Center dance and adjunct professor of dance in the Dartmouth department of theater, directed the choreography for the musical and invited Pavel to join the DDE. Pavel accepted, and the focus of his life changed. He wrote his MALS thesis on musical theater and began questioning his future in the business world. In the year since he received his MALS degree, Pavel works his day job in the Dartmouth education/psych lab and then heads for the dance studio for at least five hours of training and rehearsal. Pavel is planning to return to Russia, the construction business and his family's expectations this summer. In his words, "I do not have a degree in either dance or acting, but I have a passion! Now I know that there is no other feeling which compares to what you experience one-millionth of a second before stepping on stage and giving yourself to the audience." I saw Pavel perform with the DDE, and I sincerely hope he finds a way to follow his dreams.
I am ending the graduate alumni notes with some very sad news. Frank Anthony (MALS'84) died on March 10 at the age of 83. Frank was an active member of the MALS Alumni Council for many years and was a mainstay of the poetry readings, including the one this past February, sponsored by ASGAAD and MALS. With a background in radio and television, among many other areas, Frank read with an elegant, stentorian voice. He was a prolific writer and always encouraged others to find a voice and express it in writing. In 1986 he and his wife, Susan, founded New England Writers, an association open to aspiring writers across the country. New England Writers organizes a conference every summer and publishes a yearly anthology of short stories and poems, selected through an annual writing contest. Susan will hold an abbreviated conference this summer on July 22 in the Old South Church in Windsor, Vermont. She has established a memorial scholarship fund in Franks memory. Contributions can be made through the MALS office. I can close only with, "Frank, you are sorely missed."
