Lets get started with two items that came to me recently. The Hood Museum has purchased the "Portrait of William Legge: The 2nd Earl of Dartmouth" by Pompeo Batoni. In addition to alumni donors the Hood acknowledged the assistance of our own Joe Caldwell in securing the acquisition. Now we have another reason to visit that museum when next in Hanover. The other missive was a four-page newsletter with pictures and text all about Doug Johnston and his extended family. He does this twice a year with a copy to me for the first time. Doug left Dartmouth after two years, having already married and started a family.

From the pages of the October 1957 issue of DAM we find a new class secretary, Loye Miller, on the job. It was fun reading his column, recognizing early on Loye could really write. Quoting him, "Comes the word that John Per-Lee and Dorothy Ann Kernerof Larchmont, New York, were married last June. Dorothy went to Women's College in Greensboro, North Carolina, and finished an M.A. at Columbia in June. Johns a resident at New York Hospital." Fifty years later John and Dot celebrated the golden anniversary with a dinner party for 16 at home that included all their children with their spouses and their children. In the November 1957 DAM issue Loye inserted the item, 'And in another spring wedding Jane Gray said yes to John Higley in Millbury, Massachusetts. Understood they're now living in Worcester, where John's with State Mutual Life Assurance Cos." Fifty years later I checked in with John and Jane to learn how they observed their golden anniversary. "It was a surprise party for us because we were told it was only a Mother's Day luncheon to be hosted by our son Timothy'85." Out-of-state license plates on cars outside the house gave them suspicions, confirmed moments later when John's brother Richard '49 and sister emerged from the house. Close friends were there as well, which made the occasion memorable.
