Entertainer and civil rights activistHarry Belafonte drew an overflow crowd to SpauldingAuditorium on Martin LutherKing Day. Although his appearance drew criticism from some quarters prior to his arrival, Belafonte garnered standing ovations before and after his remarks, which urged students to address economic and social in equality both in the United States and abroad. "When you consider all of Mr. Belafonte's life accomplishments and his integral role in the civil rights movement, you can then begin to grasp his importance to the Dartmouth Afro American Society—as well as the entire community," says Afro-American Society president Robert Cheeks '07.

Government professor Allan Stam IIIhas been appointed by President JamesWright to chair a committee charged with formulating a Dartmouth policy for playing against atheletic teams with potentially offensive mascots.

Dartmouth's Greek system was honoredby the Association of Fraternity Advisors in December with its "outstandingchange initiative award." College administrators credited the Student Life Initiative for earning the citation.

Almost a third of the class of 2011 has already been accepted via early admission. The 382 accepted represent a drop in the number of students from the Northeast (91, down from 110 last year) and a record number of international students (30) for this phase of the admissions process. Recruited athletes accounted for 121 students accepted.

Tucker Foundation dean Stuart Lord hasbeen named acting vice president of in-stitutional diversity in a repositioning of the "special assistant to the president" role filled by Ozzie Harris '81, who left the College in 2006. Lord will return to his position at Tucker once a permanent V.P. is named, according to President James Wright.

Zeta Psi fraternity, which was derecog-nized in 2001 after publishing date-rapetechniques in a house newspaper, will bedisbanded and return to campus with2009 rush. Rush will be conducted by Zeta Psi alumni.

Former College librarian Margaret Ottodied December 10. She worked at the College from 1979 until her retirement in 2000. She was 69.
