For the older classmates 80 seems to have come more quietly than it did to those of us who achieved octogenarian status in 2007. Gene Finke's clan gathered in January in El Paso. He's still amazingly fit and active. My kids met here in February to join Margie and me on a Mexican Riviera cruise. Bud Gedney got a 1948 Winter Carnival poster reproduction and 1948 photo calendar—both reminders of those good days. Jerry Wensinger celebrated at his Higganum, Connecticut, Candlewood Farm. He reports a few aches, pains and hearing aids but otherwise is moving well. Asearch for family roots in Scotland was planned.
John Fenno called to let us know that son Nate is now president of one of the CSX subsidiary rail lines. John hasn't been on the slopes at all this year, a real exception for a lifetime ski patrol member. Northeast weather, particularly in upstate New York, kept him home.
Prexy Warren Daniel forwarded a clipping from the Boston Globe's Tony Chamberlain, marveling over the Dartmouth ski teams hitting the books—rather than celebrating—after sweeping both men's and women's NCAA championships for the first time since 1976. It did just happen that final exams closely followed. It sure didn't look like what we've come to expect from professional athletes and proved what class these kids have.
Warren really has the class organized this year, and shortly after this is written there will be a teleconference of the officers and executive committee. It will concentrate on the 60th reunion and the best way to have as many class members and widows attend. Any suggestions from you would be welcome at any time. Carpooling, meeting planes at airports and lodging have already been suggested. Assuming you'd like to come but...what would motivate you to come and share a few beautiful days with old friends in New Hampshire? Let us know.
While we've harped a lot on the big 60th next year, don't overlook the annual mini-reunion and Penn game, September 28-30.
