If anyone who read the column written some months ago by our highly efficient but somewhat naive then-Sec wherein he asked for volunteers to take over the writing of this monthly production of highly synthesized effluvia thinks we volunteered, then you too, my aging chum, are somewhat more than a little naive.
Be that as it may, come now ye sec to record the recent gathering of the clan, when some 614 indians, squaws and papooses boiled down out of the surrounding hills to take over Tuck Drive from Russell Sage Hall down, with some forays into adjoining areas - although not as many as Willie Leveen would have liked.
There were 202 men, who boiled an average of slightly less than one day before subsiding; 172 wives, who boiled slightly longer; and 204 children, who due to some double-time boiling made the whole trip; and then there was Glazer. Granted that he has not been worn down over the years by some of our encumbrances, but you would have been proud of Old Phil. And he's still as cute as ever!
With two marriageable daughters, several times we tried to engage him in friendly conversation, but all he can remember was the many times the Dekes ran out of beer before the AD's were ready to go home to their spotless barracks.
Even counting Phil only once, we had back 42% of our graduating class and this gave us some kind of a cup, they say. We also won another cup and turned over $281,000 to the College, so if we stopped there it would have been fine. But we didn't. The weather, except for part of Saturday was very poor, but not many seemed to notice.
The formal aspects of the program you will see elsewhere, and let me tell you we had a very fine group of distinguished representatives of this class. For a group that started from far down towards the end of the spine in 1934, our boys have come a long way.
The rest of the class has not demonstrably lost any buttons, either, because at Camp Interlaken on Friday, when all was kind of dull and a little cool, not one adult dashed into the lake. Friday night that President up there who succeeded "Hoppy" held a reception and if ye sec had known he was going to be ye sec he sure as the hot place would have been there, because it's embarrassing to have to admit that you don't go.
But we did get to the Alumni Dance and that was very well patronized. Most of the '34's were only dragged half-way before they gave up and went peaceful-like. And they were allowed to return early to the tent, after delivering the usual quota of crushed toes and bruised shins.
Saturday morning everybody showed up for the meeting, which is a sad commentary on the class boiling point, and don't you think that is an attractive collection appearing nearby? I wonder if they used the one with the hats on or off.
You remember once about nine years ago at a reunion, some fresh guy noted on many of our boys "large deposits of lead where once only sliding pads rode so jauntily." Well, strangely enough, most of that lead has disappeared, the boys, in general, look in very good shape. So you know what they did on Saturday afternoon. Most of them took a nap!
Saturday night we had a banquet and it was a jim-dandy. Joe McDonald gave a swan song as Dean, a three-and-a-half-tet rendered a couple of songs and several other jokers got up there and spoke but Werner put that slip of notes into the pocket of my shirt that got beer spilled in it.
Stan Smoyer is going to be the new Class Chairman, Jack O'Brien the new Class Agent, Scherman is going to remain at the Newsletter so we can get some news once in a while, and also use that Sports Illustrated mailing machine on which the Accts. Receivable tab is broken. Werner is moving over to Treasurer because he has a couple of expense accounts which were not honored by the previous incumbent, and, as outlined in the first paragraph, etc.
Somewhere in there Bill Scherman was presented a gift for the tremendous job he has done for this class over 25 years, and this we don't kid about because it's been a tremendous, and almost dedicated, labor of love.
Dick and Mary Gruen were gifted for their remarkable job in this gathering of the clan and Dick is going to be able to use that rocking-chair. As our southern boys say, he sure must have been "tasred" after his efforts.
To Jo Wilson was presented a set of glasses suitably inscribed "Please fill to here for '34's" and Bill Wilson, for helping Jo, received an outdoor barbecue, suitably inscribed, I have no doubt. The rest of the committee received Spiegel catalogues and all the Scotch they could drink.
Sunday morning the Foleys went to 7 o'clock mass, where there were no '34's, but the priest gave a little talk to his people about leaving Hanover, and we knew how he felt.
That great electric system in New England which we, as usual, hesitate to mention, having expressed amazement at the little education some of its employees accumulated the first time around in college, has seen fit to submit ye sec into the hands of Cornell this summer to see if that will do any good. That is the reason for the Sunday rising and the reason we can't tell you what happened Sunday except there's a hell of a lot of construction between Hanover and Ithaca.
It's also the reason that we whittle away at this unfamiliar Smith-Corona in the midnight stillness of a girls' dormitory, from which the girls have been unnecessarily removed, far from our dictionary, Bartlett's, file of ad libs, etc., to try to tell this story. Maybe we'll do better in the fall.
But if you really want to know the whole story and you weren't there, it ought to be easy to find some of the folks whose names follow and they'll sure-enough tell you.
