The Beijing Olympics drew at least four classmates to China for the 2008 Summer Games. Phil and Ellie Mahoney Loughlin took their family on a two-week adventure to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Xian (home of the terra cotta warriors) and finally five days in Beijing to watch Michael Phelps win gold in the pool and view some of the gymnastics competition. Twelve-year-old Katie (herself a budding gymnast), and 14-year-old Christopher loved the pin trading outside the venues. Russell Wolff was attending his ninth Olympic games, this time as managing director of ESPN International. He met with USOC and lOC officials and watched basketball, volleyball and swimming events. But Russell says the highlight was definitely lunch with the Loughlin family at a local-style Chinese restaurant, joined by Rob Simmelk jaer '94, another ESPN employee.
Alec Scott enjoyed his summer vacation to hear the Boston Pops at Tangle wood in the Berkshire woods of western Massachusetts. He recently relocated to San Francisco with his partner from his longtime home of Toronto. He's given up practicing law for now and is a freelance writer focusing on law and the arts. He wrote a column for the city magazine in Toronto and is looking forward to undertaking the writing life in his new home.
Dennis Morgan writes that after eight years in San Francisco and San Jose, California, his family moved back east to Darien, Connecticut. They were happy to discover that one of their neighbors is Chris Maher and his family. Dennis and Chris both work for Internet companies in New York City and often catch up on the train ride, says Dennis-preferably in the bar car!
Adam Lehman lives in Potomac, Maryland, with his wife, Belinda, and their daughters, ages 9 and 7. He's taken up play writing as a hobby and you can find his plays at www.adamplaypen.com. On the work front Adam writes that following his career at AOL, he has been "incubating several early stage ventures in the D.C. area." He says, "If you have a chance to try some award-winning Hook & Ladder beer (which gives back a portion of its revenues to local burn foundations), to develop fresh new advertising, marketing or other creative content for your company through the GeniusRocket crowd-sourcing platform (www.geniusrocket.com), to trade video games through Goozex.com, or to promote your 'green' or healthy living products through the Natural Path Media network (www.naturalpathmedia.com) I would appreciate it!"
Finally, Scott Garber checked in from Denver, where he is an administrative law judge with the State of Colorado. He and his wife, Janice, who is a clinical social worker, have sons Reid, 11, and Bryce, who is 8. Scott writes, "Our lives are filled with school activities, soccer (I'm a goal keeping coach and also a U.S. Soccer Federation grade 7 official) and adventures in the mountains of Colorado and deserts of Utah. I continue to work hard to maintain my health in light of my diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes that I received in August of 1988. I've been insulin-dependent since then and currently enjoy good health and good diabetic management with the use of an insulin pump. When we get the chance to take a break from our hectic lives we enjoy traveling to Santa Barbara for the beach and nearby scuba diving opportunities that the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary provides." Scott also mentions that he looks forward to seeing many current and past friends at our upcoming 20th reunion.
Kerri Ueberroth also attended the fes- tivities in Beijing with her husband and two boys and says they found it to be one of the best Olympics in recent history. Kerri says the events were thrilling, the skies were clear, the venues were beautiful, and the Chinese people were gracious and warm.
Planning for our class festivities is well underway, so make sure the dates are on your calendar for June 19-21 in Hanover.
