The class column is being written in Steve and Linda Waterhouse's home in Vail, Colorado, where CarniVAIL-2008 is getting under way. There is an abundance of snow and blue sky. Many of the usual suspects are assembling for skiing, visiting and parties. Those present or expected include: Ted and Marcia Atkinson, Rich and Sue Bloch and their children, Tom and Diane-Campbell, Norm and Ellen Christianson, Dick and Sue Durrance, Roger and Nancy Hansen, Chuck and Gretchen Lobitz and Ken McGruther and his son. A particular highlight of the weekend will be the Leap Year Ball attended by us '65s as well as local Vail Dartmouth club members and alumni of Tuck and Thayer schools who are also in town.

Classmate Lawrence Mages was elected chairman of the real estate department and member of the executive committee at Bell, Boyd & Lloyd LLP, where he is a partner. Larry concentrates his practice in real estate but represents a wide range of business, corporate and entrepreneurial clients. Among his leisure activities he holds season tickets to the Cubs.

Richard Joseph sent this message regarding his work on the Obama campaign on January 8. "My candidate came in second but congrats to Sen. Clinton, whose base of support in New Hampshire was formidable." Obviously things are looking brighter for him recently. Richard taught in Dartmouth's government department, 1979-1988. He is currentlyjohn Evans Professor of Political Science, Northwestern University. Tom Campbell is another strong supporter of Obama, having known him for many years in Chicago.

Bob Murphy brought to my attention an artide in the Dartmouth Medical School magazine, which featured the work of Myron Falchuk, M.D., an expert on celiac disease. He entered the Dartmouth Medical School after our sophomore year. The article praised Myron for the process of diagnosis and treatment of his patient. He is described in the article as having been born in rural Venezuela and growing up speaking Yiddish at home and Spanish in the streets, then being sent to live with relatives in Brooklyn. This background has made him particularly attuned to language, and it is in talking with his patients that some of his diagnostic breakthroughs occur. He is currently at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

Peter Baumbusch wrote: "Three months ago my wife, Cherry, and I opened the Dubai office of my law firm, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. So we are now living here amongst the construction, noise and excitement of this amazing city. And, of course, all '65s are welcome to pay a visit and enjoy a round of golf and some great Arabic/Persian/Indian food."

It was a pleasure to read Mike O'Connells article in the last issue of the Alumni Magazine. His recollections of professor Thomas Vance, who taught poetry, are so insightful.

We are looking forward to seeing many classmates at the class of'6s 65th birthday in Washington, D.C., on May 9 to 11. Contact Ted Bracken if you need information: bracken@ jhu.edu.

Also, mark your calendars for the Homecoming mini-reunion on October 17 to 19.
