As this column goes to print I have just returned from a cold and snowy Hanover, where I attended Club and Affiliated Group Officers Weekend (CAGOW). Other '82s in attendance included Bernie Thompson and Rachel Froman-Bettencourt. Bernie serves as first vice president of the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association. He lives outside Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with spouse Karen Cassidy-Thompson and their two children. Rachel is the treasurer of the Dartmouth Club of Central Massachusetts and has also served as its president, vice president and secretary. Rachel is a lawyer who spends most days in juvenile court as a court-appointed attorney for indigent parents or children in child abuse and neglect cases. I attended CAGOW as a board member of the Dartmouth Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Alumni/ae Association.

I managed to talk to Scott Appleby last fall after the wildfires that raged throughout southern California. Scott lives in Rancho Santa Fe with his family. They were evacuated and were fortunate to return to a home covered with ash but still standing. About 20 homes in their neighborhood were destroyed and the fire came within a half mile of their house.
