Volunteering for the Cosllege has long been an important part of the Dartmouth alumni experience and the class of 1982 leads the way. On July 1 Bobby Charles began his three-year term on the Dartmouth Alumni Council where he will join current councilors Tom Daniels, John Moscarino and Bill White. Bobby will be the 20th member of our class who has served on the council! Former councilors include Emily Bakemeier, Cheryl Bascomb, Gail Koziara Boudreaux, Craig Bradley, David Eichman, Ted Everett, Steven Faber, Linda Bornhuetter Gridley, Philippa Guthrie, Gary Levine, Ralph McDevitt, Jon Merriman, Sherri Carroll Oberg, Mary Thomson Renner, John Strawn and Bernie Thompson. In addition, Emily was the first woman to serve as Alumni Council president and Sherry was the second. This year Tom will chair the council's honorary degrees committee.

Congratulations go out to Cheryl Bascomb on her election as first vice president of the Dartmouth Association of Alumni (AOA). Cheryl and her running mates are grateful to all of you who took time to vote in the AOA election. I am also pleased to report that Philippa Guthrie and Martha Solis-Turner have volunteered to be our new mini-reunion co-chairs. If you would like to help organize a mini-reunion in your area, please contact one of them.

Malcolm Robinson writes that he has worked for a long time in the "rag trade" in New York City, where he is currently president of lifestyle sportswear brands for Phillips Van Huesen supervising the IZOD and Timberland brands. Perhaps free T-shirts for the 30th reunion? Malcolm also raises money for Save the Children and Dignity U Wear, which is a charity that distributes new clothes to lowerincome families. He and his wife, Tracy, and their children Syd, Casey and Claudia live in Westport, Connecticut.

I am sad to report the death of our classmate, Chip Hankins. Chip died on April 29 in Waihi Beach, New Zealand, where he lived with his wife, Philippa, and sons Jasper and Cameron. Memorials were held for Chip in Waihi as well as at his high school, Maumee Valley Country Day School in Toledo, Ohio, and in San Gregorio, California, at the Red Gate Ranch of Greg Jones. Many Dartmouth friends were there to remember Chip, including Ed Frechette, Sue Elliott, Eric Christensen, Greg Jones, Thaxter Sharp '81, Jim Freeman '83, Greg Curhan '83, Toby Reiley '81, Mike Golub '83, Craig Seligman 'Bl, Jerry Walke 'BO, Bob Brown '80 and Su-moon Paik '81. Several years ago Chip moved with his family to New Zealand, where he became an organic dairy farmer and entrepreneur. Chip was a fun-loving, warm and generous person who was well loved by many of his classmates and friends. One of his great strengths was his ability to bring people together and maintain connections with friends.

Carol Davis Fiske shared a wonderful story about Chip: "During senior year Chip convinced a fairly large, pretty random group to spend a week on the island of Curacao. Clearly he was operating at the behest of some travel agent and beginning what appeared to be a long journey into successful entrepreneurship. Why Curacao? Why this particular group of people? How did we talk our parents into agreeing to it? I can't even really remember what we did there although it did all work out. I guess it was further evidence of people willing to take a leap of faith at Chip's suggestion, especially if it involved some sort of adventure. That sense of adventure continued long into his adult life. I hope it will continue through his children." I hope you had a summer adventure!
