Groups Congratulations to DAPAAthe Dartmouth Asian Pacific American Alumni Association (DAPAAA) for receiving the Affiliated Group of the Year Award during Club and Affiliated Group Officers Weekend (CAGOW) in February. DAPAAA co-chair Andrew Chu ’01 accepted the award and told the audience of DAPAAA’s successful 10th anniversary banquet in New York City last August. DAPAAA public relations chair Victoria Moy ’03 was selected as Affiliated Group Leader of the Year. All five affiliated groups sent representatives to CAGOW this year.

Ricki Fairley-Brown ’78, president of the Black Alumni of Dartmouth Association (BADA), introduced President Wright at the Saturday breakfast of CAGOW. Ricki is the proud mother of Amanda Brown ’07, who is working long hours in her new job at the White House. BADA board member Norman Brown ’74 also attended CAGOW. Affiliated group leaders were excited to meet Joni Wiredu ’92, who is the new assistant director for alumni diversity and shared interest groups in alumni relations. Joni looks forward to working with the affiliated groups and strengthening their ties to Dartmouth. Believe it or not BADA is two years shy of being 40 years old! Founded in 1971, it is reputed to be the oldest black alumni association in a predominately white college or university. Start thinking now about taking part in the 2011 anniversary celebration in Hanover. Kudos to those BADA members who have returned to campus recently! While financial support of the College is important, visits to campus—especially when you have time to spend with current students of color—are just as valuable. With that in mind, thanks to George and Sylvia Langford ’98A, Shauna Brown Leung ’99, Steve White ’77, Michael Watts ’75, Ricky Cole ’06 and others who found their way back to Hanover during the past few months. Congratulations to Jesse Spikes ’72, Rhodes Scholar and successful lawyer/entrepreneur, who has thrown his hat into the mayoral race in Atlanta.

Alexis Sainz ’96, president of the Dartmouth Association of Latino Alumni (DALA), flew up from Washington, D.C., to attend CAGOW. Alexis is an attorney with Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy LLP in D.C., where she is a member of the global project finance department. Alexis has big plans for DALA.

The Dartmouth Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Alumni/ae Association (DGALA) once again sent the largest contingent to CAGOW. DGALA is happy to announce the election of its officers for 2009-10: president, Susi Kandel ’00; vice president, Caroline Kerr ’05; treasurer, David Eichman ’82; and secretary, Peter Williams ’76. DGALA board members at CAGOW included Jamal Brown ’08, Nicholas Chamousis ’73, Mikee Guzman ’06, Garrett Hornsby ’87, Caroline Kerr ’05 and David Eichman ’82. Board member Cherie Holmes ’79, who lives in Keene, New Hampshire, came up to Hanover for half a day and president Susi Kandel ’00, who was skiing in Vermont that weekend, managed to meet board members for a drink. DGALA board members met with LGBT students for lunch on Friday and for dinner on Saturday.

The Native American Alumni Association of Dartmouth (NAAAD) was represented by Debbie Atuk Tu ’04, Janine Fate Avner ’80 and NAAAD president Hans-Dieter Klose ’93. Janine, who is an attorney in Los Angeles, is the president-elect of the Dartmouth Alumni Council. NAAAD member Carmen Lopez ’97 has been appointed as executive director of College Horizons Inc., a nonprofit organization that runs a national college and graduate school access summer program for Native American, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian students. Carmen writes: “College Horizons is an incredible program that does meaningful work in Indian country and I am very excited to be a part of this organization.” Happy spring!
