When Carpenter Hall opened in September 1929 the new building included an art studio for student artists such as the one pictured here (circa 1935). The art department was based in Carpenter until the opening of the Hopkins Center in November 1962, when the department gradually broke into two sections, one for art history and one for studio art. Today students create art in the Hop—and learn about it in Carpenter Hall.
