The Rev. Dick Petersen, though retired, serves as pastor-priest in a summer chapel whose congregation is about 50-50 Protestant and Catholic on an island in Maine. On March 10 the Winston Churchill Center presented a bust of Churchill to Don Hall in recognition of the friendship that existed between Churchill and Don's father, Joyce C. Hall, founder of Hallmark Cards. Several of Sir Winston's paintings have been reproduced as Hallmark Christmas cards. In April we were fortunate enough to dine with Clift and Joan Whiteman and Bob and Joan Mcllwain at the Ocean Grill—a fun-filled evening. No mention was made of the upcoming alum elections. Anent those elections I received a call from Frank Harrington, who was wrestling with the issues. I was too—so could offer no advice. Dave Taylor empathizes with my spinal stenosis by virtue of his experience with two artificial knees. Bob Funkhouser has to be the current class golf champ as the result of his win of the Los Angeles Country Club's 2008 Senior Golf Tournament with a net of 60! Comments from Gerry Starno? Joel Leavitt attended Ted Bamberger's 80th birthday party in San Francisco, where he was joined by Tom O'Connell's wife, Annie, and by Vinnie Hill, who tickled the ivories at cocktail hour with great skill as in the days of yore. My roommate Fred See reports that he and Posy are well and planning to return to Port Charlotte, Florida, in October. Joe Medlicott bemoans the incredible snowfalls up his way during the past two winters. One of our reasons for forsaking New Hampshire was the dearth of snow in the late 1980s. For three years Bob Mauk, with Joan at his side, valiantly battled the big C. On May 13 Randi and I paid a visit to Joan at Hospice House, where he lay. The battle ended a few hours after we left. Bob will long be remembered as the founder of Winners Walk Tall, a program designed to instill an understanding of morals, manners and ethics in elementary schoolchildren. Bob, indeed, walked very tall.
