I'm writing this column two weeks after reunion and I'm still suffering from post-reunion blues. We had more than 370 classmates join together for food, lectures, drinks, sporting events, drinks, dancing and drinks! We went through 25 kegs and 20 bottles of Tanqueray (and that's just at our tent!). We have a new slate of class officers and I was somehow "elected" DAM secretary while I was still sleeping Saturday morning. Thanks, first, to our amazing outgoing class officers: Reed Webster, Martha Sundberg Hartfiel, Brad Mont, Debbie Michel, Jim Sterling, Lisa Quirk Kaija, Rick Herrick, Davies Beller and Tom Oppenheim. Our reunion chairs Frank Davis, Anni Dupre Santre and Jimmy Ulcickas did a fantastic job of pulling our reunion together.
New class officers are Mac Gardner and Andre Hunter, presidents; Becky Ankeny, corresponding secretary; Jim Gregg, treasurer; Tom Oppenheim, Alumni Council; Rob Hirshfield, class chaplain; Jenny Ross, Webmaster; Kathy Coster, head agent; Sarah Reynolds, reunion cochair/mini-reunions; and Bill Huber, reunion co-chair. Lisa Kaija, Dave Wallanga, Peter Kilmarx and Rob Bowers head our class project, Forever Green. Our class has given $20,000 to jump-start a sustainability program at Dartmouth's organic farm. We're funding its greenhouse project and a student intern for three years.
Our 25 th reunion class fundraising effort reached a rewarding culmination just shy of $5,000,000. Immediately after Tom's presentation of the check to President Wright, Davies offered a matching fundraising challenge from the brothers of Beta to stimulate our class to reach the goal of $5 million. While the class fundraising effort continues, the Beta Challenge ended at the end of reunion weekend after raising five current-use financial aid scholarships to support women entering the College this fall. Our class gift is still shy of $5,000,000, but class participation is strong at 52 percent. Helping raise funds were Wylie Collins, Kathy Coster, Jim Ventre and Barb Tormlinson. A huge round of snaps also goes to Sylvia Racca, executive director of the College fund and now an adopted member of our class.
Jenny Hanley Ross and her crew of Dave Roberts, Jonathan Wolcoff and Phil Gerson did a fantastic job on our reunion book. Bob Coppinger's guys at Kirkwood Printing did an amazing job as well. Snaps to the editorial team behind our reunion book, ForeverGreen!
For those of you who weren't at reunion, this 388-page book is filled with stories, memories and photos. Catch up on what your classmates have been doing! Copies are available for $55 (including shipping). You can order the book, reunion chairs and mirrors by contacting Jim Gregg at congregg@ rcn.com.
Some favorite reunion memories include dancing and singing at the top of our lungs on Saturday night (mosh pit!), watching Bill Kouchalakos and Jeff Soinski pick out Dartmouth clothing for their kids, catching up with friends who live within 50 miles of me, fireworks, Steve Quinn "swimming" in Phi Delt's pool, texting, Eddie Lear losing a chugging contest (two beers to one), seeing Mike Coster walking into PhiDelt with daughter Kate '10 at 3 a.m. on Father's Day, Jim Bloomer wandering around with a cup of Jack Daniels and a bottle of tonic water because drinking Jack Daniels makes him thirsty, Margaret Webster making sure we had fun on Saturday night and Kelly Hunter singing "Last Dance."
Again, thanks to all who planned and participated in our reunion. Send me your memories of reunion (before they fade!) and any other news (or gossip) you may have. We'll continue this in the next column and on our Web site, www.dartmouth83.org. Also, see http://dartmouth83forevergreen.shutterfly. com for a lot of great pictures! (Thanks, Becky Ankeny, for pulling that together!) 600 words, exactly! Forever Green!
