The weather this fall has been wonderful, so your secretary has had the chance to see three football games. The Penn game was most delightful, because Frank Drake was seated near us. Although the first half of the Penn game was close, eventually Dartmouth broke out and scored a comfortable victory. As you no doubt have seen, Harvard and Yale were won in the last seconds. At the Penn game, we issued an invitation to Frank Drake to attend our birthday party, which was held October 14 (instead of the usual October 29).
It was an unusual party in that, some few months ago, our son, Drew, mentioned to a representative of the Portuguese Wine people that I had started drinking port about the time of my 65th birthday. I suppose they saw an opportunity to attribute my longevity to a daily sip of their nectar, so they flew a bottle of port, bottled in 1877, the year I was born, and presented it to me in the Drake Room. Through the kindness of Sandeman, I received a case of more recent vintage port. Some 52 of my friends and family gathered to try the 1877 port and enjoy the Sandemans. For those whom we did not reach, or may have been forgotten by my sons, we offer an apology. To those who sent nice thank you notes, our appreciation.
The presentation of the port wine was made by Carlos Nunos, Portuguese vice consul from Boston, in behalf of the Porto Wine Institute. Pictures were taken by the Dartmouth Film Services for use on Portuguese Television. A poem was read from the Alumni Magazine Group, which we are too modest to print and we were greatly honored by the presence of President John Kemeny. Our regrets were that all of our classmates could not have been present. We'll try to save some of the wine for next June.
