Our classmate Ryutaro Shiudo has written a letter to Ralph Sautter from his home in Takarazuka, Japan, near Kyoto, Kobe and Osaka. He was with us from 1953 to 1955. His brother-in-law served six and one half years as ambassador to the United States, the longest tenure since WWII. My wife and I are proud that he has done a good job for both countries. Now he is baseball commissioner.
Dr. Gerry Bernstein's son Cliff '89 took ownership of Freedom Inn at Niseko, Japan, last April. He has lived in Japan for almost 20 years and was president of the Dartmouth Club of Tokyo. Gerry says Niseko has world-class powder snow. Gerry is director of diabetes management at the Friedman Diabetes Institute, Beth Israel Hospital in New York and an officer of Generex, a publicly traded company producing an insulin delivery to the lining of the mouth. His work has taken him to Russia, India, Spain and Brazil and Ecuador (where the product has been approved for distribution). He has been to almost 50 countries. The company is entering final stages for approval in the United States and Canada.
Dr. Dick and Deborah Roberts live in Tenafly, New Jersey. He is professor emeritus of medicine at Cornell. He continues as he has for the past 13 years directing, teaching and running seminars about infectious diseases for young doctors, primarily from countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia. The participants must have some command of English. The project began in Austria and has a permanent home in a Salzburg Castle, where 40 young physicians live and eat with Dick and other faculty members. Fifteen to 20 lectures are new topics. Malaria is on the agenda. He has projects in the Caribbean and Tanzania. Debbie continues as the director of a school for dramatic arts. Their son Bryan '89, an old friend of Laurie Fanger Reed '89, has two children living near Gordie Russell in California. Bryan is a managing partner in Benrock Venture Capital. Sister Hannah '95 is a doctor specializing in digestive diseases and sister Gwyneth is an investment banker.
Lew Wolfson, retired professor of journalism at American University in Washington, continues to work in his field. His daughter Sarah is a lyric soprano, performing in operas and in recital. Daughter Hannah '90 is a journalist writing for the Birmingham News about the new Washington administration. Lews son Jeff is a traditional and photojournalistic photographer, listed in Wikipedia.
Don and Kayi Hummel have three daughters and 11 grandchildren visiting them in Kenilworth, Illinois, Sanibel, Florida, or Michigan. He is perhaps the best golfer in the class of '55. on their way back from Florida Don and Kayi hope to attend the class of '55 mini-reunion in Washington, D.C., on April 23-26.
