When the urge for journeying beyond Hanover's quaint downtown strikes, the Upper Valley offers hidden treasures for those with a car and an adventurous spirit. DAM intern Karen Iorio '10 asked some students to share their favorite places to explore off campus.

"Fat Bob's in Warren, New Hampshire, is a summer staple for cheap, yummy ice cream during the trip to Moosilauke. They have delicious moose tracks and other homemade ice creams as well as tons of soft-serve flavors."

Kaili Lambe '09 Hilo, Hawaii Women's and Gender Studies

'Apple picking at Poverty Lane Orchards in Lebanon, New Hampshire, because not only do you get to eat delicious (and cheap!) apples, but you can buy a mouth-meltingly fantastic honeycomb filled with the happiest honey in the world."

Karen Orrick '11 Bethesda, Maryland Neuroscience and Religion

"I've gotten lost in the Antique Mall in Quechee, Vermont, for four hours."

Dave Yoss '09 New Hartford, New York Anthropology

"I really like Dan & Whits in Norwich, Vermont, because of the sheer amount of eclectic stuff they have—I feel like I could spend at least a few hours wandering about."

Isabel Murray '12 Los Angeles Anthropology

"Maine, because it is the perfect mixture of quaint New England towns and the great outdoors. I went on a five-day road trip with three girlfriends at the end of sophomore summer. Our trip included camping in Acadia National Park, kayaking around Mount Desert Island, going to an outdoor Bela Fleck concert in Freeport and relaxing on beaches in Kennebunkport."

Jenna Lynch '09 Kauai, Hawaii History

"The Vermont Flannel Co. in Woodstock, Vermont. You can never have too much flannel during a Hanover winter."

Jessie Maxwell '09 Atlanta English

"This spring I went to Tip Top Pottery in White River Junction, Vermont, to paint a piece of unfinished pottery as a Valentines Day gift for my boyfriend. He loved it, and I loved the studio."

Denise Zong '09 Niskayuna, New York Biology modified with Environmental Studies

"The other night I went contra dancing with some friends at Tracy Hall in Norwich. This really cute old man who's been going to these dances for over 20 years taught me how to swing. It was hilarious."

Leah Scrivener '11 Baltimore Anthropology

"Poverty Lane Orchards is an awesome place to pick apples. There's nothing like an apple pie straight from the dorm kitchen!"

Ginna Roach '12 Washington, D.C. Undecided

"One time I went to an ice cream parlor in Fairlee, Vermont, called the Whippi Dip. The service was curt and the ice cream was mediocre. However, the short car ride was pleasantly scenic."

Andrew Lohse '12 Branchburg, New Jersey Government
