With an information desk that helped students locate the people who are late meeting them for lunch and a computer to check e-mail in the meantime, Collis was more than just a meeting and eating place, it was a movement.
Student Scene
THE CLOSING DOWN OF THE COLLIS STUDENT Center for reconstruction has left many students in search of the special combination of qualities which only Collis had: atmosphere and healthful food.
Then there was the eatery. No other place on campus could make Linda's wild-rice salad or the kind of macaroni and cheese students loved as kids. The people who ran Collis now work behind a counter in Thayer Hall's Food Court. There are beads of sweat running down their foreheads from the pressure of the place. There was no pressure at Collis.
People would wake up early and battle the bitter cold to sit in Collis with a cup of gourmet coffee and a sweet roll, and prepare for class. But hope is on the horizon: construction of an expanded student center is ahead of schedule.
