I am typing this set of notes on my 37th birthday, which, since I am the fourth-youngest person in the class, tells me only just how old we all are getting. As you read this, think that 20 years ago we were just on the cusp of getting to know one another—fresh out of high school, full of expectation and promise with one last summer before heading off to Hanover.
Luckily, we are still young enough to embrace new technologies, which is how I got the information for this month’s column. Carl McGowan was the first to send an update to the new class e-mail account, and writes about the changes that it seems many of us are making: “After nine and a half years at Compaq & Hewlett-Packard I decided on a total 180-degree turn and jumped into health care. I left HP on October 31 and started November 3 as director of marketing and practice development for Houston IVF, one of the top fertility clinics in the country. I’d barely gotten my feet wet before I was fielding interview requests for comments on the octuplet mom. I will say that I can still draw upon the rapid learning skills I gained in Hanover, which came in handy as I engaged the frenzied media on personal responsibility, doctor-patient relationships, medical standards and health care policy. Anyone remotely interested in the changing world of reproductive technology is welcome to give me a shout.”
I trawled Facebook to see if I could glean some information from classmates. Since I hail from Peru, Elizabeth O’Hara Solan’s photograph caught my eye, since she appeared to be standing atop Macchu Picchu. “Yes,” she replied, “I finally made it to one of my ‘life list’ places to see. I went with a great group called the Worlds Outdoors, based out of Boulder, Colorado. I then spent two more weeks seeing Peru on my own and loved every second of it. It is an amazing country and the most incredible place I have traveled so far. I got back to Denver and met a great guy, John Solan (JHU ’97), and got married last spring in Maui. One intrepid Dartmouther was able to attend, Amy (Folsom) Teeling ’94, thanks to her close proximity in California. This fall we churned out a little rugrat, Peter James. He keeps me busy, as does the Children’s Hospital of Denver, where I am a pediatric emergency department attending. Some days, I wonder if I will ever sleep again!”
Heather Guras also responded to my query about a status update she posted recently where, “Some lady from an unavailable number keeps calling and seems to be weeping while screaming in Spanish.” Understandably freaked, Heather notes, “I took five years of Latin and no one ever mistakenly calls me speaking Latin, sadly. Anyway, I don’t have any news about myself but I will share that Jennifer Huffman Ulasewich just gave birth to a girl, Annika, and she’s gorgeous! Jen already has a cute son named Alex. She’s a realtor in the Denver area.”
Facebook is also the place to go for updates on Annie Edgerton’s current quest to sing the National Anthem at every baseball stadium. The rabid Mets fan has been singing up a storm between “The Star-Spangled Banner” and performances of Mamma Mia in New York (now that she is off the national tour and can plant herself in one place). With that, I hope you’re having a wonderful summer—and I hope to have more news to report for the beginning of the school year in September.
