Greetings! I am writing this from sunny Washington, D.C., where I have spent a few days crashing on the couches of Haley Morris and Ephraim Froehlich. My visit also included a tremendous dinner at Chili’s with Betsy Bryant. But you guys are busy so on to the
Let’s start with grad school news! Bridget Alex, who is currently housesitting in Hanover while researching giant ancient lemur teeth, will be starting a Ph.D. program in archaeology at Harvard. She will also be spending the summer on a dig in Transylvania in Romania. Teresa Smith was accepted to attend the University of Denver in the fall for clinical psychology. Also in Colorado, Nick Williams is finishing up a year of teaching in the Marshall Islands and will be starting work toward a Ph.D. in linguistics at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Owen Zidar will be leaving his job and moving out to Berkeley, California, in July to get a Ph.D. in economics at the University of California, Berkeley. He would love to hear from people who will be out there (or have friends out there). Melissa Fan will be attending law school in the fall at the University of Southern California. Already in law school is Veronica de Zayas, who will be clerking in Washington, D.C., this summer for the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, then moving to London for her second year of law school.
Internationally, Kathryn Robertson is in Barcelona, Spain, working for Dartmouth as an assistant teacher for the Spanish LSA program. She will be in Middlebury, Vermont, this summer to begin a year-long master’s program in Spanish at Middlebury before moving to Madrid to continue the program in the fall. Dan Dittrick has been accepted to the University of Bradford’s peace studies department to pursue an M.A. in conflict resolution and will be moving to the United Kingdom this September.
On a travel-oriented front a group of Boston- based ’08s—Alex Cushman, Gary Freilich, Evan Meyerson and Emily Weisburst—spent four days in March “exploiting Iceland’s financial struggles.” Evan highly recommends it. JeanCarlos Bonilla, Ashia Sheikh, Stephanie St. Louis, Mitalee Patil and Irene Shyu went to Kauai, Hawaii, for 10 days at the beginning of April. JeanCarlos said it was “the spring break trip we never took while at Dartmouth.”
Hanging out across the pond, Watson Sallay is traveling around Europe, sightseeing, working on farms and looking for a job. Andrew Klein purchased homemade instruments from Thailand to play in the streets in Greece. He will also be moving to Bavaria, Germany, in June to learn German. Out in Eastern Asia Dan Weisman is “rocking China” as part of the band Dude, which recently opened for Mike TV (apparently “a British band of moderate fame”).
For a brief period of time early this spring Zach Mayer reports that Ethan Mefford lived in a shed in Zach’s yard in Oakland, California, and drank all his beer.
Chris Crawford is in Denver working in capital markets for Jones Lang LaSalle. Also there is Teryn Williams, who is really enjoying Denver and has a great job at Parker Global Strategies.
Jessica Long reports that despite being laid off, sadly, she has taken advantage of her free time to clean her mother’s basement, volunteer and help spearhead some youth initiatives in her church.
Katherine Gorman started a new job at Booz Allen Hamilton at the beginning of May. Xiao Ding just got a job working at the Department of Defense. J.B. Cholnoky was rehired to teach at Choate next year and is trying to be a fly-fishing guide in Idaho for the summer. Jared Dowdakin is in Chicago working as a futures trader, holding down the overnight shift working on the European markets.
