The holidays may now be a distant memory, but the events below will warm your heart and bring you back to December 2010. It's wonderful to see that the holidays can still be about giving back and welcoming new friends. The Dartmouth Club of Greater Boston held a volunteer event at Community Servings in Roxbury. Ten alumni gave their time to assemble meal delivery packages for terminally ill homebound patients and their families.
The Dartmouth Club of Hawaii joined forces with the Cornell Club of Hawaii for a "Big Red & Big Green" holiday party in early December. Club president Howard Hodel '75 noted that each club had about 25 attendees and there was a great showing from the recent alumni. The Bambu Two Cafe was the setting for this event, where Dartmouth and Cornell alumni mingled and enjoyed the holiday spirit.
Another dual-club event took place out in California, where the Dartmouth Club of Orange County and the Dartmouth Club of Los Angeles gathered for an alumni reception and attended the Anaheim Ducks vs. Arizona Coyotes National Hockey League game. The group was treated to a special meet-and-greet with Ducks' player Teemu Selanne in his private suite. As an added bonus the Dartmouth alumni were able to watch a fellow alumnus as Lee Stempniak '05 was playing for the Coyotes. The organizers of this event were Erin Dornan '00, Sarah Leners '09 and Mabelle Hueston '86, P'I4, all of whom deserve a great amount of credit for their efforts. Other alumni in attendance included Jim Scott '69, his wife, Cindy Wolcott '76, Charles Kenyon '94, Nancy and Doug Jones '71 and Peri Gunay, DMS'86.
The holiday season would not be the same without musical performances. The Dartmouth Club of the Florida Keys hosted the Dodecaphonics (Dodecs) in mid-December. The 12 singers were treated to free housing in the Southernmost Hotel in exchange for performing at several places on the hotel's property. The Dodecs performed by the pool, near the beach and in the outdoor bar throughout their stay. Club president Sidney Goldman '60 commented that the guests and patrons were delighted to hear the amazing voices of the Dodecs and they brought out the holiday spirit. The main performance took place at the Tropic Cinema in front of more than 75 alumni and guests. Goldman said, "The audience was enchanted by the music and by these multi-talented ambassadors of our College on the Hill." To make the event even more special the Dodecs introduced Alexa Dixon '15, who had just been admitted to Dartmouth as an early-decision applicant from the Florida district.
The Dartmouth Club of Greater Boston also organized a music event as about 30 alumni and guests attended the Boston Symphony Orchestra holiday pops concert in mid-December. Club president Jane Harkin Kullmann '01 was in attendance and commented that "a great time was had by all." The group was lucky to have front row seats to the concert and the view of Keith Lockhart and the orchestra were excellent.
Spectacular music was also heard in New Jersey as the Dartmouth Club of Suburban New Jersey welcomed the Dartmouth Aires to its holiday dinner where more than 100 alumni and guests, including recently admitted '15s and regular decision applicants, enjoyed wonderful food and entertainment.
Impressively, the Dartmouth Club of Southwestern New Hampshire held its 99th annual meeting where 25 members and guests enjoyed dinner and guest speaker Don Pease, the Theodore Seuss Geisel Professor of English. What a fantastic way to end the year!
