News from overseas! David Karukin ’48 excitedly wrote in that the Dartmouth Club of Thailand increased its membership by three new alumnae. Sarah Geithner Adam ’86 is doing consultancy work for the World Bank. Sarah has a history in Thailand as she spent some of her teenage years there with her brother Tim Geithner ’83, while their father, Peter Geithner ’54, was working for the Ford Foundation. Another new member to the club is Allison Kay ’09, who is doing a special research project at the Thai Red Cross Pasteur Institute. Interestingly, the institute is also known as the Snake Farm because venom is extracted from snakes for the benefits of its antitoxins. The third new club member, Elizabeth Hadzima ’06, is working for the Nollen Group in Bangkok. We hope we will learn more about these alumni as well as other alumni who are members of international clubs.
Heading back to the States, the Dartmouth Club of Chicago welcomed Charlie Wheelan ’88 in late October for a lecture and discussion about economics of fiscal policy, healthcare reform and energy as they pertained to the midterm elections. The event was held at Northwestern University and Wheelan, a University of Chicago and Dartmouth economics professor, was well received. Elections are always a hot topic, and club events focused around informing and educating alumni are a great idea. Another intriguing event that the Dartmouth Club of Chicago hosted was a guided tour of the Museum of Contemporary Art. This museum is one of the largest facilities in the nation devoted to art created since 1945.
More annual picnic news as the Dartmouth Club of Portland hosted its club picnic back in mid-August at the home of Jack Spring ’57 in Gearhart, Oregon. The annual picnics of this club are experiences not soon forgotten, as Spring has a full softball field on his property, which provided a venue for a competitive yet fun outing. It’s a good thing that Dartmouth alumni are not competitive or that could get quite intense. Who believes that? Okay, so there have only been a few brawls and broken bones, but those heal and pride is forever!
