Clubs & Groups

The annual Club and Affiliated Group Officers Weekend (CAGOW) was held in Hanover on January 20-22. CAGOW is always a great opportunity for officers of clubs and groups to gather to share ideas and celebrate successes while enjoying a winter weekend in Hanover. One of the weekend’s highlights is the Saturday evening dinner in the grand ballroom ofthe Hanover Inn at which club and group awards are presented. The honorees ofthe year were metro club, Dartmouth Club of New York; large club, the Dartmouth Club of Maryland; medium club, the Dartmouth Club of Orange County; small club, the Dartmouth Club of Japan; group, the Dartmouth Asian Pacific American Alumni Association (DAPAA); large club president, Tara Gala ’95 of the Dartmouth Club of Maryland; medium club president, Ellen Brout Lindsey ’81 of the Dartmouth Club of Pioneer Valley: metro club president, Winnie W. Huang ’92 of the Dartmouth Club of Los Angeles; small club president, Ken Klemm ’80 of the Dartmouth Club of the Gulf Coast; and group leader, Maxine Mauricio ’93 o fthe Native American Alumni Association of Dartmouth (NAAAD).

Alumni living near Ivy League schools in the New England and the Mid-Atlantic states have many opportunities to see Dartmouth men’s and women’s teams compete throughout the academic year, presenting opportunities around which clubs can build events such as pre-game and post-game gatherings. The Dartmouth Club of Eastern New York (DCENY), however, has the non-Ivy cities of Troy and Schenectady, where ice hockey contests annually pit Dartmouth men and women against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) and Union teams. DCENY alums, guests and team parents cheered onthe Big Green during four games during the weekends of J anuary 13 -14 and February 11-12. On January 13 the Dartmouth men defeated RPI in Troy on Autism Awareness Night, when no loud horns, bells or flashing lights were used during the game to enable special guests on the autism spectrum to enjoy the event. Among the alums who attended one or more ofthe games were club president Jerry Dollar 72, Lyon Greenberg ’54, Stephen Wilson ’55, Mary Francis Sabo ’86, Bob Conway 73 and Danielle Dyer ’82, Tu’89.

The Dartmouth Lawyers Association (DLA) held its 30th annual winter meeting and continuing legal education (CLE) program, dubbed “CLE and Ski XXX,” during the weekend of February 2325 at Rimrock Resort on Sulphur Mountain in Banff, Alberta, Canada. The theme for this year’s CLE was “Family Law for the Non-family Law Practitioner: Things You Want to Know.” Sixtyfive alumni and guests enjoyed morning and early afternoon skiing and other winter sports at three nearby ski areas in the Canadian Rockies, followed each day by mid-afternoon CLE presentations by an all-star panel of practitioners and social events in the evenings. CLE presenters included Richard Merrill ’73’s spouse and law partner Thea Fabio, Amy Folbe ’84, Jim Hunnicutt ’98, Hilary Miller 73, Stacy Phillips ’80 and Alyssa Rower ’01. The DLA elected Barbara Murphy 79 to serve as president for 2017-19, Joanna Cline ’95 as secretary, Jennie Arlin ’88 as vice president for website and social media, Hilary Miller as treasurer, Tom Skilton ’95 as vice president for membership, Brian Daucher ’91 as vice president for the association directory and Jeff Carton ’88 as vice president for events and communications. Rick Sharpless 79 organized the winter meeting and CLE program. Past DLA president Howard Morse ’81 will organize the 2018 DLA winter meeting that will be held in Squaw Valley near Lake Tahoe in California on February 22-25.

This is my last column as Clubs & Groups editor. I am pleased to introduce the new Clubs & Groups editor, Eva Kristina Brock ’01, Th’02, who is an engineer and energy manager in Idaho. Stina is a former president of the Dartmouth Club of

San Francisco and a former vice president of the Dartmouth Club of Western Washington. In 2013, while serving as an alumni councilor, she received the Young Alumni Distinguished Service Award. Please help Stina do this job by keeping your club and group websites current with your event news and email her with reports ofyour activities. Thank you for what you do as Dartmouth club, association and group officers and members. You are a great Big Green beat for an alum reporter to cover.
