John Scales of Dover, N. H., attained his ninetieth birthday October 6. Foster's DailyDemocrat of that city made editorial mention of the fact, from which we quote the following: "Mr. Scales has always been a unique figure in the life of our city. He is our historian. He knows more about old Dover, the customs and traditions that have gone into the making of this city of ours, more probably than any other living person. His history of Dover is in itself a delightful volume. His many contributions that have appeared in this paper during the years have assisted greatly in public enlightenment and have helped to a better understanding of old Dover, which has made possible our present city by the Cocheco." Mr. Scales continues to act as secretary-treasurer of the Society of Colonial Wars in New Hampshire.
