SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ASSOCIATION
December, 1925

Although the Southern California Alumni Association did not learn until October 6 that Dartmouth Night was to be observed on Friday evening, October 9, nevertheless a committee immediately appointed by President J. Leland Richardson worked so effectively that twenty-six men were rounded up for Southern California's celebration. The meeting was held at the home of C. G. Milham 'O6, at Altadena.

The committee that did such good work on such short notice was made up of V. R. Salinger 'OO, Richard B. Merrill 'OB, James J. Norton 'OB, and E. W. Hiestand 'lO. The members of the committee were ably seconded by their wives, with the result that a great feed delighted the group that could be reached on short notice.

There were talks on Dartmouth Night by W. B. Hodgkins '99, Dr. George P. Laton '06, and Jimmy Norton.

Those present were R. B. Ahlswede 'l2, W. E. Allen '24, Gerald Barnes 'll, R. L. Bennett 'l3, "Dutch" Brummer 'lB, Ashton Castle '24, R. K. Charles '2O, Roland Foss 'l9, Stanley J. Gibson 'l3, E. W. (Second Letter)

It is a far cry from the Harvard Stadium to the University Club of Los Angeles, but nevertheless the events that transpired at Cambridge on Saturday, October 24, were rather well reproduced at the University Club on that date, and nearly fifty members of the Southern California Alumni Association felt almost as if they had been present in person for the big game.

Which is to say that through the excellent arrangements effected by E. W. Hiestand 'lO, who was appointed as a committee of one by the president of the Southern California Association, J. Leland Richardson 'OB, the Southern California alumni had complete play by play reports of the Harvard contest. They had been practicing up on songs and cheers for a couple of weeks, and they turned out in force to demonstrate that they, hadn't forgotten any of these. While the news came in over the wire, and while Hiestand and a Harvard collaborator transcribed the plays on a blackboard, the Southern California group sang the old songs in much the same spirit that must have actuated those who were personally present in Cambridge.

The private wire was opened at twelve thirty, and then the reading of telegrams was continuous right up until two o'clock. The difference in time between Los Angeles and Cambridge gave the Southern California group a distinct advantage in getting the jump on the news.

Those who were present included R. B. Ahlswede 'l2, Gerald Barnes 'll, R. L. Bennett 'l2, David E. Bradley 'O3, Dr. H. G. Brainerd '74, Charlies H. Brock 'BB, "Dutch" Brummer 'lB, Eugene D. Burbank '9l, Ashton Castle '24, R. K. Charles '2O, Dan Coakley 'l4, Andrew W. Comstock 'l3, Webster B. Evans 'OB, Roland Foss 'l9, J. F. Glynn 'O9, Leslie A. Hatch '9B, E. W. Hiestand 'lO, Dr. Albert Lyon Hill 'l4, Charles C. Hitchcock 'l6, Willis B. Hodgkins '99, Ralph M. Kilpatrick 'l9, Ed. O. Martin 'O9, Richard B. Merrill 'OB, Howard M. Miles 'IS, C. G. Milham 'O6, James J. Norton 'OB, C. E. Pierce 'l6, Charles W. Remele 'l2, H. C. Richardson 'l5, J. Leland Richardson 'OB, L. I. Rothschild '24, V. R. Salinger 'OO, Paul S. Sample 'l9, H. M. Sanborn 'O2, Ed. Seward '2O, George W. Shaw 'B7, Albert Shiels, Jr. 'l7, George C. Stoddard 'lB, John J. Troy 'l2, Charles H. Woods '76, Charles W. Wright '24. Alsol present were David Bradley, Jr., and C. R. Lyman, who enters Dartmouth next fall and whose brother is now a member of the class of '2B.
