Charles Hall, janitor of Rollins Chapel and Webster Hall, who rang the bells of Dartmouth Hall for the ceremonies inaugurating Dr. William Jewett Tucker as President of Dartmouth College, in 1893, tolled the bell in the tower of Dartmouth Hall for the commemorative service in honor of Dr. Tucker held in the Chapel October 3.
Mr. Hall, the senior janitor of the College, entered upon his duties at Dartmouth April 1, 1888, at which time he was the only janitor employed by the College. He is reported never to have missed a day of work since he took up the duties of his position and in addition to ringing the chapel bells has rung the Dartmouth Hall bell at 7 o'clock each morning, and again in the evening at such times as a Hanover curfew law has been in force.
It was Mr. Hall who, during the years of Dr. Tucker's presidency, always held the president's robe for him and assisted him to put it on before each chapel service and official ceremony at which the president presided.
In addition to caring for the Chapel and Webster Hall, Mr. Hall has charge of the mowing of the campus and the care of the college flag. It was he whose duty it was to put the flag on the campus at half staff following Dr. Tucker's death.
