GIFTS PROVIDE FELLOWSHIP AND SCHOLARSHIP

A gift of $20,000 by the Hon. A. V. Barker '72 of Bradenton, Florida, for the maintenance of a graduate fellowship and a gift of $3,000 by the Hon. William W. Niles '83 of New York City for the purpose of increasing the scholarship founded by his father, W. W. Niles '45, have been announced by the President's office.

Mr. Barker's gift is given in memory of his son, Lieutenant Fred Demerritte Barker A. R. C., killed at Flouville, France on October 14, 1918. This gift will found a fellowship valued at $1,000 a year. This fellowship will be maintained under such regulations as the trustees of the College may make.

Mr. Barker came to Dartmouth after having served in the Civil War. He was in the fourth Pennsylvania regiment. After graduating from Dartmouth, he took up the practice of law. Between the years 1890 and 1902, he served as a judge in the 47th Judicial District of Pennsylvania. Between the years of 1902 and 1909, he was engaged in the practice of law with his son, Fred Barker in Edensburg, Pennsylvania. He retired from active practice in 1909, and is now living in Bradenton, Florida. He was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity while in College.

Since leaving Dartmouth, Mr. Niles has been in law practice in New York City. He has been prominent as a member of The Bronx Board of Trade, various transportation committees and of the state assembly. While in College, he was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity.

The Niles family has been directly connected with Dartmouth for the past four generations. The present William Niles' great grandfather, Nathaniel Niles having been a trustee of the College from 1793 to 1820, and his grandfather, William Niles, a graduate in the class of 1802.
