Dr. Arthur E. Ewing, eminent oculist of St. Louis, received the degree of Doctor of Science from Washington University at its commencement this year. Dr. Ewing has long been connected with the University as lecturer and instructor. In bestowing the degree the chancellor addressed Dr. Ewing as follows: "Arthur Eugene Ewing: in the same year in which Seeley Mudd and Pope Yeatman received from Washington University the degree of Engineer of Mines, you received the degree of Doctor of

Medicine from the St. Louis Medical College (afterwards consolidated with Washington University), and after study in Germany you received from Washington University the degree of Master of Arts. Though you have not traveled far in doing the work of your profession, you have accomplished much. As lecturer, teacher, and author you have helped to develop the science of ophthalmology, and as a practitioner you have ably served humanity. What greater service could one render than

to help to save for mankind the power to see the beauties of the world? For your long and worthy service to your profession

and your science, Washington University is glad to confer upon you the honorary degree of Doctor of Science."
