It certainly is refreshing to sit here and write this column just to get my mind away from the daily struggles of existence in the environs of New York City. I have been driving to downtown New York during the strike and probably encountered less problems than most, but it still is a far cry from the halcyon life of rural New Hampshire.
Another fellow sufferer at this time is Brad Winans. Brad and Peggy recently moved from New Jersey to Northport, Long Island, and I'm sure at this moment they wish they could have picked somewhere farther than that. For many years Brad has been with the Chevrolet division of General Motors. Last I heard he was distribution manager in this area. Their two sons and two daughters are growing up with Sharon now thirteen, Brad, eleven, young Peggy, eight, and Jim five.
Just so we don't slight anyone and competition is maintained, we have Rusty Ratcliffe who I believe is with Ford Motor Company in Massachusetts. Rusty and Mary recently moved into another house in Holden, Mass.
Some of you might have children who want to live the good life under the sun rather than brave the north winds. If you are considering the beautiful campus of the University of Miami, contact Jim Wellington who is now an English professor at the school. Jim and Mary live very close to the school and their daughters are now eighteen and seven.
It is a great tribute to the Class of 1948 and to the quality of a Dartmouth education to note the successful achievements of so many of our classmates who are doctors. The most recent among those receiving professional recognition is the promotion of Dr. Maurice Levy to chief surgeon at the Veterans Hospital in Amarillo, Tex. Maurice and his wife Joan also have four children, three boys and a girl and the Levy family recently moved into a larger home.
All of you I am sure, will remember that Frank Stern was happiest when he was on a trip with the Outing Club. Well, I guess teaching in Rhode Island became too confining. Frank just accepted a position as Professor of Geography at the State College at Bridgewater, Mass., which is a little nearer the mountains. Frank and Lelle have two sons, Richard, almost fifteen, and David five and a half.
I just received word that two of our classmates in Washington, D. C., recently moved to a new residence. Wid Washburn and his wife Lena and their son Harold are now living back in the city after moving in from Fredericksburg. Wid has the fascinating job of curator of the Political Science division at the Smithsonian Institute.
Living nearby in Alexandria, Va., where they just moved to another home, are Roil and Patience Spiers. Ron is with the State Department and occupies the vital position of Director of the Disarmament Office. Even though very frustrating most of the time, Ron's job must be very exciting occasionally. The Spiers are parents of two attractive daughters and a son, Peter, eleven. Should any of you decide the time has come for a winter vacation why don't you try Hawaii, which I recommend very highly. If you should desire a personal tour or any kind of advice, you can contact Hugh Shearer in Honolulu. Hugh is an associate lawyer in the firm of Anderson, Wrenn & Jenks. Last word I had was that Hugh was still on the loose. If any of you hear whether one of those lissome island lassies caught Hugh, let me know.
When our reunion rolls around next year, I hope Harry Wood can break away from his new practice in Schenectady to attend. Harry certainly seemed to have a good time in years past. Harry specializes in obstetrics and previously practiced in Hartford, Conn. Last I heard he still hadn't found the one he was looking for although judging from reunions many have found Harry to be attractive.
Life is very pleasant in the beautiful countryside in Eastern Pennsylvania for that successful life insurance agent Tom Donnelly. Tom lives and works in Doylestown in the middle of Bucks County. Tom and Barbara Ann just moved to a new home. My last information indicates they have two children with their oldest Charles now five.
Another successful agent working for the same company, Northwestern Mutual Life, as Tom, is Dick Margeson. Dick works in Boston, but recently moved to another home in Scituate down toward the Cape. Barbara and Dick have two daughters, Gail, thirteen, and Beth, nine. Dick Jr. is eleven.
Dr. John Parks is now teaching psychiatry and neurology at the University of Virginia Medical School in Charlottesville. He formerly had been teaching and in practice in Boston. It will be interesting to see if David, eleven, and Ann six grow up with a Boston or Southern accent.
Bill and Liz Pettit just moved into another new house, which I presume was built by the Wm. D. Pettit Building Company in Columbus. Ohio. It is nice for their two daughters and son to get a new house whenever things need repainting.
Here's hoping we see a little snow this winter here in the East as those of us who don't go out West or to Europe are entitled to a little skiing also.
See you next month.
Skiing enthusiasts Charles Eaton '49,wife Ann, and sons Chris, Brad, Scott.
