RANDOLPH McNUTT '71 GENEROUS BENEFACTOR OF THE COLLEGE
NOVEMBER 1927

Randolph McNutt, a graduate of the College of the Class of 1871, died at his home in Buffalo July 22 following an illness which has extended over the past year and a half. The bulk of his estate goes to Dartmouth. It is estimated that the amount which will accrue to the College will not exceed $500,000.

There is no stipulation made as to the use of the gift except that it be applied to the needs of the College for general educational purposes at the discretion of the Trustees. The purpose to which the money will eventually be put by the College cannot be determined until the amount of the gift and the time when it will become available can be determined. Mr. McNutt requested that in using the bequest a fitting memorial should be erected on the campus as a reminder of his affectionate regard for his Alma Mater.

Mr. McNutt was born in Warrensburg, N. Y., May 31, 1851. After receiving the degree of bachelor of science from Dartmouth in 1871 he was graduated from the Albany Law School in 1873. He married Evelyn Marihew of Sandy Hill, N. Y., December 29, 1882. He was prominent in the civic and social life of Buffalo and he has always supported worthy charity. His benefactions were often in the form of aid to Buffalo boys who wished to get an education at Dartmouth. In 1924 he gave the College $50,000 which was applied to the construction of the addition to the Hanover Inn.

For the past twenty years Mr. McNutt has been owner of the Markeen Hotel in Buffalo and he was the founder and owner of the Randolph McNutt Company, distributors of school furnishings, theater seats and similar equipment for educational institutions.

Mr. McNutt served as a member of the Alumni Council from 1918-1924.
