Last Will and Testament of John W. Hayley, March 1927 "My Last Will"

(From a poem by the late Sir Walter Raleigh) "What a nuisance then will be All that shall remain of me; Shelves of books I never read, Piles of bills undocketed, Shaving-brushes, razors, strops, Bottles that have lost their tops, Boxes full of odds and ends, Letters from departed friends, Faded ties and broken braces Tucked away in secret places, Baggy trousers, ragged coats, Stacks of ancient lecture-notes, And that ghostliest of shows, Boots and shoes in horrid rows, Though they are of cheerful mind, My lovers whom I leave behind, When they find these in my stead Will be sorry I am dead.

"Be it remembered that I, John W. Hayley, of Tuftonboro, County of Carroll, State of New Hampshire, being of sound mind and memory, but mindful of the uncertainty of life, do make this my LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT as follows:

"After the payment of my just debts and funeral charges, I hereby give and bequeath, to wit,—

"1. To my cousin, Charles W. Davis, the old wooden compass which once belonged to Isaac N. Bickford; and which Makensie maintained was formerly the property of Captain Vere Royce, one of the earliest surveyors of the town of Tuftonboro.

"Also, I give, devise and bequeath to the said Davis the old wooden clock which wears on its face the legend 'R. Whiting Winchester.' I give it to him because, besides myself, he is the only person living who remembers the old clock as it 'clicked behind the door' in the old house on "Mount Pleasant."

The list of oldest graduates necessarily received a revision. John Scales '63 of Dover, New Hampshire, secretary of his class, now becomes the second oldest graduate and the third and fourth places are occupied by James W. Pedkins '64 of Hampton, New Hampshire, and Martin V. Perley '63 of Danvers, Massachusetts. The position of oldest graduate is still held by Samuel H. Jackman '60 who celebrated his ninety-sixth birthday last July.
