Dartmouth's first Freshman Swimming team lost to Exeter in its first scheduled meet when the preparatory school team outscored it 46 to 16 in the Spaulding Pool February 26. McGrath, of the freshmen, won the 100 yard breast stroke race to give his team its only first place in the meet.
The swimmers of Phillips Andover Academy also defeated the Dartmouth freshmen in a meeting at Andover March 5. Dartmouth won only two of the events in this meet, McGrath accounting for a victory in the 200 yard breaststroke race and Birnie capturing the 200 yard free style swim. R. G. Anderson, of the Andover team lowered the Andover pool record in the 100 yard backstroke race by negotiating the distance in 1 minute and 3-5 seconds.
The Dartmouth team won its first victory when it defeated the team representing the Huntington School of Boston, March 8. The freshmen won four events, and five second places, W. H. Birnie, R. R. Fawcett, and N. E. McGrath capturing the 200 yard free-style, the 100 yard free-style and the 100 yard back- stroke events, and the relay team winning the final race.
The Green team was able to provide little opposition for Yale's freshmen in a meet at New Haven, March 12, and the Blue swimmers were returned victors by a score of 51 to 11. Dartmouth's best performances were scored by Birnie, who; took second place in the 440 yard swim and: Wright who took second place in the 100 yard breast stroke. Nyce, of Yale, who won the 100 yard breast stroke in 1 minute: 1-9 seconds, and Howland, also of Yale, who captured the 100 yard free-style race in SS 1-10 seconds provided the feature performances.
