AUGUST, 1928

The Dartmouth College Library has received from a donor who prefers to remain anonymous for the present, the Frederick J. Libbie collection of bookplates. This collection consists of from fourteen to fifteen thousand plates and was at the time of Mr. Libbie's death probably the largest collection in private hands in the United States. In the collection are nearly 4,000 early American plates, including 589 of the plates listed in Allen's American Bookplates; the only known complete set of plates engraved by Paul Revere; an original George Washington plate together with plates of .many of the other Presidents; the rare plate of William Penn, as well as plates of many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. In addition there are about 3,000 modern American plates including 250 proofs; 300 Canadian plates and almost 7,000 English and foreign plates. This collection, which is one of the first to be given to the new Baker Library, will be installed in the Treasure Room.
