Representative individually and responding instinctively in your own nature to those characteristics and obligations which pertain officially to a Canadian Minister in Washington that he be an Ambassador of Peace; educator and philanthropist, whose imagination and whose constructive genius created an institution Hart House of the University of Toronto outstanding in dignity and beauty of design, devoted to the highest ideals of student fellowship, and broadly inclusive in the provision it makes for the multiform activities of the student body; for your services in the high offices you so worthily fill, and for your spiritual leadership in education, American colleges at large must honor you. It is, however, peculiarly appropriate that Dartmouth College should welcome into her own particular fellowship one whose ancestors were among the New England pioneers of Massachusetts Bay, and whose later forebears, even before this College was founded, became settlers in the Province of New Hampshire. I confer upon you the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws.
