Honorary degrees were conferred upon eight men at the exercises of Dartmouth's 161st Commencement. At that time 419 seniors received their degrees of Bachelor of Arts and advanced degrees in course were awarded to seven men. The degree of Doctor of Philosophy was conferred upon Kenneth N. Ogle, A.B., 1925, Colorado College, and A.M., 1927, Dartmouth College. The degree of Master of Arts was conferred upon Albert B. Kellogg, A.B., 1909, Wheaton College; Richard B. Learnard,, B.S., 1928; Edwin Powers, A.B., 1919, Williams College, and LL.B., 1924, New York Law School; Kenneth D. Smith, A.B., 1928, Pomona College; Alberto F. Thompson, Jr., 8.5., 1928; and John Turkevich, B.S., 1928.
The graduating class was the second largest in the history of the College, being smaller by 20 than the previous year's class of 439.
The honorary degree of Master of Arts was conferred upon William D. Knight '08 of Rockford, Ill., State's Attorney for Winnebago County. The degrees of Doctor of Science were conferred upon Dr. William G. Morgan of Washington, D. C., and Dr. Jesse K. Marden 'SS of Athens, Greece. Dr. Morgan is president of the American Medical Association and Dr. Marden is a medical missionary with a notable record of service in Turkey.
Degrees of Doctor of Letters were conferred upon Timothy Cole, wood engraver, of Poughkeepsie, N. Y., and upon William Gillette, actor and playwright, of Hadlyme, Conn. Degrees of Doctor of Laws were awarded to Thomas William Proctor '79, lawyer, of Boston, Mass.; Thomas Nelson Perkins, lawyer and Fellow of Harvard University, of Boston, Mass.; and Charles Vincent Massey of Toronto, Can., who is Canadian Minister to the United States and recently has been chosen for the post of High Commissioner for Canada to Great Britain.
