It's lucky I met Jud Whitehead last night, or the pickings this time would have been a whole lot slimmer than they are. But as I was hiking up Lexington Ave., in search of a square meal, there loomed up in the murky gloom none other than the aforesaid Mr. Whitehead—who subsequently furnished the meal. Jud is living in Tudor City, so we wandered over there, picking up some lettuce, celery, and odds and ends on the way. And out of these plus stock on hand Jud singlehanded constructed one of the soul-satisfying meals. After pushing away from the overladen bridge table and breathing a contented gasp, we dragged out the old Green Book and hashed things over.
We both agreed that the tracksters were making the splinters fly in good shape this winter—Monty Wells has been winning championships regularly in the 45 yd. high hurdles, and Hal Moody just tied for first in the high jump at the recent Intercollegiates.
Sam Magavern is doing all kinds of big things in law—and among other things is attorney for Jud's father's company. Dick Canton formerly worked with Jud until he decided one fine day to go into the movies—I'm not sure whether he talks or just moves, but anyway he was in the "Big House" and some others I've forgotten.
Joe Goodwillie gets rid of a whale of a lot of securities for Bonbright, I understand. Cy Smith is a broker in Waterbury, Conn. And Bill Morton sells bonds in Albany and Rochester.
Red Moore is Gil Tapley's assistant, teaching statistics at Tuck School.
Charley Dickinson is one of the more prosperous bankers of Charleston, W. Va.
Charley Dickinson is one of the more prosperous bankers of Charleston, W. Va. And Jim McConnon is the latest of the proud parents.
Jud himself sells brass, aluminum, nickel, copper, and their alloys for the Whitehead Metal Products Co. And one of Jud's esteemed customers is Dartmouth College—furthermore, every time the College needs a nice shiny copper roof Jud gets a trip to Hanover. There'seems to be nothing like keeping one's customers well satisfied—and personally.
Lunch with Ed Reece today. Ed sells gloves for Fownes and had to rush away and sell a few; so I couldn't get much news out of him. But it does look as if this man Grimes has gotten married and forgotten to mention it to us. We'll look it up and let you know.
