This issue of the Magazine marks the fifth anniversary of this department, and not in these five long years has this writer been faced with such a difficult football assignment. The editors stole a march on the sporting department by omitting the August issue, and whatever demerits this issue had, it did provide a fertile bull-field for pre-season football soundings.

We have not seen the team in action as yet, but when this issue reaches you Dartmouth will have played two games and will be pointing for the first major game of the season, the contest with Lafayette, and as Jack Cannell said yesterday, "the whole complexion of the season might be changed by the loss of two backs." While he did not name the backs, we knew who they were.

The. main problem right now, in my case, is to dampen the natural enthusiasm that I felt during the first two days of practise; we all have been watching football develop at Dartmouth for several years, but I cannot recall a single season under Jackson Cannell which conjured up as much whole-hearted enthusiasm as this one has. There has not been a season which has been so rich in hope as 1932, and even with the incongruous situation of having an entirely new backfield to train, we all feel very confident of the outcome.
