House Party Fever
JUNE 1932 J. S. Monagan '33

The long, sunny afternoons, the budding green of the trees and the springing grass of the campus causes us old timers who remember the days of the spring house party in Hanover to hark back to other and better days. We were oppressed with a strange feeling of emptiness and unrest as the golden Saturdays of May 7th and 14th tranquilly passed into memory. AH Youth, well may we whisper the words of Kimball Flaccus, the good gray poet, "la comedie est finie."

We do not know how much truth there is in the statement that crammers for hour exams rub the nose of Dean Laycock's bust in the Baker Library for good luck. However, it seemed to us after the last tedious hour exam period that the prominent appendage was just a bit brighter, that there was a trifle greater contrast between its brazen glory and the more sombre hue of the surrounding physiognomy.

Several weeks ago there was made an announcement the results of which according to those versed in things artistic, will mark an epoch-making period in Dartmouth's artistic history. The Dartmouth of May 10th bore the news that Jose Clemente Orozco, the famous Mexican artist, had been secured by the College to exhibit the methods of fresco painting which had made him and his countryman Rivera famous. He is at present at work in the corridor between Carpenter Hall and the Baker Library and although his work is still in the early formative stages, one is vividly impressed by the power of his creation. "Peace" is the subject which the artist has chosen for representation and the mural will symbolize the freedom from the destruction of Var and a return to the interest in the creative arts.

The holding of the first Senior banquet, the appointments for Senior movies and finally the Cap and Gown notice which appeared in The Dartmouth this morning herald the beginning of the end and open up a vista which is closed by sad-eyed seniors and mad, glad reuriers. . . . Perhaps we'd better break off here before we get you sobbing over the dear dead past.
