Laft Wednefday was the anniverfary Commencement at Dartmouth College. At half after 11 o'clock A.M. the Board of Truftees and Executive Authority, Gentlemen of literary character, Candidates for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and Members of the Inftitution, walked in proceffion from the Prefident's to the Meeting-houfe. The exercifes of the day were introduced with a prayer by the Prefident, and a piece of mufic adapted to the. occafion. The literary performances were,
A Latin Oration on "the Profperity of! America," with falutatory addreffes by Thomas A. Merrill.
A forenfic difpute on this queftion— "Is the earth an oblate pheroid?" by Abner Howe and Daniel Parker.
A philofophical Oration on the "intellectual fyftem," by Simeon Lyman.
A Dialogue on "Algerine piracy," by David Jewett and Afabel Stone.
A Hebrew Oration on "the fear of the Lord," by Nathaniel Shattuck.
An English Oration on "Education"! with the valedictory addreffes by Caleb! J. Tenny.
Degrees were awarded . . . The degree of Doctor of Medicine was conferred on Nathan Smith.
Mufic fuceeeded, and the exercifes of the day were clofed with a prayer by the Prefident.
SOCIETIES
On Tuefday at 9 o'clock A.M. a difcourfe from thefe words, "He fhall be called wonderful," by Rev. Elijah Parifh, before the Literary Adelphi. At 12 o'clock a difcourfe before the Phi Beta Kappa, from thefe words, "Take faft hold of inftruction, let her not go; keep her, for fhe is thy life," by Rev. Eliphalet Gillet.—At 4 o'clock P.M. an Oration on "the influence of Opinion," before the united Fraternity, by Daniel Webster.
All thefe performances did honor to those who composed and delivered them.
We learn from Sharon, that on Thurfday Auguft 20th, Mr. Seth Austin, a tranfient perfon, was thrown from his horfe, (when in full (peed) which put an end to his exiftence.
